A Voice From the Afterlife

The episode opens with the Great Saiyaman rescuing a crashing plane and delivering an elaborate introduction to reporters. A little girl in the crowd calls him a geek. Gohan's superhero persona remains an endearing disaster. He heads to Capsule Corporation to explain his predicament: Videl has forced him into the World Martial Arts Tournament, and his helmet will not meet competition rules. Bulma's solution is a turban and sunglasses. Trunks sarcastically approves.

Vegeta overhears and announces he will compete. Then a voice fills the room. Goku, speaking through King Kai from Other World, tells everyone he will return to Earth for a single day to fight in the tournament. He asks Gohan to carry the news to Chi-Chi. Vegeta promises to settle their rivalry. Goku laughs and says miracles can happen.

Gohan travels across the planet spreading the word. At Kame House, Krillin has retired from fighting and grown out his hair, but the prospect of seeing Goku reignites his excitement. Android 18 and their daughter Marron round out the domestic scene. At the Lookout, Piccolo receives the invitation with his usual restraint, offering only a cutting remark about Gohan's outfit. Chi-Chi is thrilled about Goku's return but forbids Gohan from entering. The mention of prize money reverses her decision instantly, and she sends him off to train.

Gathering the Old Guard

This is the episode that reassembles the cast after seven years apart. Every character's reaction to Goku's announcement reveals how they have changed. Krillin has settled into domestic life with Android 18 and their daughter Marron, his fighting days seemingly behind him. Piccolo has remained at the Lookout in quiet meditation. Vegeta has never stopped training, driven by a rivalry with a dead man. The tournament becomes the catalyst that pulls all of them back into the same orbit. What makes the sequence work is that each reunion carries genuine emotion. These characters have histories together, and the prospect of seeing Goku again, even briefly, is enough to change the direction of their lives.

Krillin's Quiet Seven Years

The reveal that Krillin married Android 18, grew his hair out, and has a daughter named Marron is delivered with Gohan's casual narration as he approaches Kame House. Gohan even breaks the fourth wall slightly by commenting directly on Krillin's hair. The domestic setup at Kame House is a far cry from the battlefields of Namek and the Cell Games. Android 18 spars with Krillin not as training but as motivation to earn breakfast. It is a small, lived-in detail that sells the time skip better than any exposition could.

The manga chapter this episode adapts is "Strongest in the Heavens!" and it covers the tournament announcement and reunion sequence. The anime expands the material significantly with the plane rescue, the movie set detour, and additional scenes at the Lookout.
