A Decade of Peace

A full ten years have passed since the destruction of Kid Buu. Trunks, now a teenager, flies to Mount Paozu looking for Goten. An aged Chi-Chi answers the door and directs him to Gohan's house nearby. There, Trunks discovers how much has changed. Gohan has become a scholar, surrounded by books and preparing for academic conferences. A wedding photo on the wall shows his marriage to Videl, and beside it hangs a portrait of their four-year-old daughter, Pan.

Videl appears, commenting on a television commercial where Mr. Satan promotes the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament. She expresses exasperation at her father still taking credit for feats he never accomplished, comparing him to a professional wrestler whose ring is the entire world.

The Warriors Reassemble

Trunks finds Goten sparring with Goku in the mountains. Vegeta and an older Bulma soon arrive, and Bulma scolds Goku for disappearing for five years to do nothing but train. Vegeta cuts to the point: is Goku really entering the tournament? Goku confirms it and reveals that someone incredibly powerful has registered to compete. This mystery fighter is human, not an alien, and Goku believes he may be strong enough to actually challenge him.

The news energizes Vegeta, who immediately declares that both he and Trunks will enter. Goku adds that his granddaughter Pan will be fighting as well. Goten reluctantly joins after Goku forces him to cancel a date, prompting Vegeta to joke that their sons have grown soft during the long peace.

Grandfather and Granddaughter

Tournament day arrives, and the extended group heads to the stadium on Papaya Island. Vegeta and Bulma's young daughter Bulla is introduced, roughly the same age as Pan. While the adults find their seats, Goku takes Pan on a tour of the grounds, buying her ice cream and winning prizes at the game booths. When a rude child knocks her cone over, Goku quickly calms her with a replacement.

Behind the scenes, Goku visits Mr. Satan, who is terrified that the Saiyans will expose him as a fraud. Goku assures him that if any of their group reaches the finals, they will let Mr. Satan claim the victory. Trunks and Goten arrange better seating for their families, and the stage is set for what promises to be a momentous tournament.
