Goku and Piccolo throw everything they have at Raditz, but the Saiyan warrior's power is overwhelming. Only through the ultimate sacrifice can they hope to stop him, and Goku pays the highest price a father can.
The battle against Raditz begins with a harsh lesson in the gap between Earth's strongest fighters and a true Saiyan warrior. Goku and Piccolo attack together, combining their skills in ways they never could as enemies, yet Raditz handles them both with almost casual ease. Piccolo loses an arm early in the fight, immediately demonstrating just how outmatched they truly are.
Piccolo reveals a secret weapon: a devastating new technique called the Special Beam Cannon, which concentrates all of his energy into a single spiraling beam. The attack requires precious time to charge, so Goku takes on the role of distraction, buying Piccolo the seconds he needs. When the beam finally fires, Raditz dodges it by the narrowest of margins. Their best shot has missed.
Goku manages to grab Raditz's tail, exploiting a known Saiyan weakness, but Raditz feigns submission and then breaks free. What follows is a brutal beating that leaves Goku broken on the ground, seemingly without any options left.
Locked inside Raditz's space pod, young Gohan has been listening to his father's screams. The boy's hidden power erupts in a burst of pure rage, and he smashes through the pod to deliver a headbutt that genuinely stuns Raditz. The Saiyan warrior is left reeling, his armor cracked, his composure shattered by a power level that briefly eclipses his own.
The moment is fleeting. Gohan's power fades as quickly as it appeared, and Raditz recovers to knock the boy unconscious. But the opening is enough. Goku seizes his brother from behind in a full nelson hold and shouts for Piccolo to fire again. The Special Beam Cannon pierces both brothers, and as they lie dying, Raditz delivers one final warning: two far stronger Saiyans have heard everything through his scouter, and they will arrive on Earth within a year.
Goku's death at the end of this episode carries enormous weight, both narratively and thematically. He chooses to die so that his son and the entire planet might live, and his friends can only watch as he slips away. The Dragon Balls offer a path to resurrection, but the threat Raditz warned of with his dying breath transforms what should be relief into dread.
Kai's version of this pivotal moment tones down some of the graphic elements, replacing the gaping wounds of the original Dragon Ball Z with burn marks while preserving the emotional impact. The episode closes the Raditz conflict while opening the door to everything that follows.
