The Clock Runs Out

Three agonizing hours crawl by, and Snake Way seems to stretch on forever. Goku pushes himself to his absolute limit, flying at top speed along the winding path, but the distance is simply too great. Back on the battlefield, the reprieve expires. Vegeta, his patience spent, orders Nappa to resume the fight and eliminate the remaining defenders.

Nappa launches back into the battle with renewed ferocity. Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan fight together as best they can, coordinating their attacks and trying to exploit any opening. There are flashes of brilliance; Krillin nearly lands a Destructo Disc that could have ended Nappa outright, slicing close enough to cut the Saiyan's face. But these small victories only enrage Nappa further, and his counterattacks grow more violent and reckless.

At that very moment, Goku reaches the end of Snake Way. Kami teleports him back to the living world, and Goku leaps onto the Flying Nimbus, racing toward the battlefield. His friends sense his approaching energy, and for the first time in hours, hope flickers back to life. But Vegeta senses it too, and what he detects on his scouter changes everything.

Piccolo's Shield

Vegeta reads Goku's approaching power level and realizes it far exceeds what any of them expected. Unwilling to let potential informants survive, he orders Nappa to kill every remaining fighter immediately. Nappa charges his most devastating attack, the Bomber DX, and fires it directly at Gohan.

What happens next defines Piccolo's entire character arc. The Namekian warrior, once Goku's sworn enemy and the self-proclaimed Demon King, throws himself between the blast and the child. The explosion tears through Piccolo's body, and he crumbles to the ground. In his final moments, he tells Gohan that the boy was the first person to ever treat him as something other than a monster. Piccolo dies, and with him, Kami and the Earth's Dragon Balls cease to exist.

The Redemption of a Demon King

Piccolo's sacrifice is widely regarded as one of the most powerful moments in Dragon Ball Z. The character who began as a villain, born from pure evil and consumed by hatred for Goku, dies protecting a child he grew to love. It is a complete reversal that feels earned rather than forced, built on months of shared hardship during their training together.

The loss of the Dragon Balls adds a layer of strategic consequence to the emotional blow. Without Kami, there is no way to resurrect anyone who has fallen. The stakes could not be higher as Goku finally speeds toward the battlefield.
