The battle between Goku and Vegeta reaches a fever pitch as their signature energy attacks collide in a beam struggle for the fate of Earth. Defeated in combat, Vegeta resorts to an artificial moonlight technique to trigger his Great Ape transformation.
Goku's Kaio-ken times three gives him the edge, and he presses the advantage with everything he has. The blows he lands send Vegeta crashing through rock formations, and for a few breathless moments, it seems like the battle might be turning in Goku's favor. But the physical toll of the Kaio-ken is mounting. Every muscle in Goku's body is being pushed past its structural limit, and the agony is written across his face.
Vegeta, battered and humiliated by a warrior he considers beneath him, reaches his breaking point. If he cannot defeat Goku through martial skill, he will simply destroy the planet. Rising high above the battlefield, he gathers his energy into the Galick Gun, a concentrated beam powerful enough to annihilate Earth entirely. The threat is not a bluff; Vegeta would rather destroy the Dragon Balls and any chance of immortality than accept defeat at the hands of a low-class Saiyan.
Goku responds with the only technique that can match it: a Kamehameha amplified by Kaio-ken times three. The two beams collide in midair, creating an enormous energy struggle that lights up the sky. For 42 seconds, neither warrior gives ground. Then Goku pushes the Kaio-ken to times four, pouring every remaining ounce of his strength into the beam. The Kamehameha overwhelms the Galick Gun and blasts Vegeta into the upper atmosphere.
Vegeta survives the blast, though barely. His armor is shattered, his body damaged, and his pride wounded beyond repair. Yajirobe, who has been hiding throughout the entire battle, emerges briefly to congratulate Goku, only to learn that Vegeta is still alive. He promptly retreats back into hiding.
What comes next changes the nature of the fight entirely. Vegeta, remembering that the moon has been destroyed, creates a Power Ball, an artificial source of Blutz Waves that replicates the effect of a full moon. Despite the energy cost of creating it, the technique gives Vegeta exactly what he needs. Bathed in the artificial moonlight, his body begins to expand. Fur sprouts across his skin, his features distort, and within moments, the Saiyan Prince has become a towering Great Ape with power ten times his base level.
The beam struggle between Kamehameha and Galick Gun is one of the most celebrated sequences in Dragon Ball Z, and Kai's version preserves its intensity while tightening the pacing. The remastered animation gives the energy clash a visual clarity that the original lacked, making every frame of the struggle feel immediate and consequential.
Vegeta's Great Ape transformation resets the power dynamic completely. Goku, already battered from pushing the Kaio-ken to dangerous levels, now faces an opponent whose power has increased tenfold. With his body breaking down and his techniques exhausted, Goku's options are narrowing rapidly.
