A Saiyan's Selfish Wish

Krillin stands over the broken Vegeta with Yajirobe's katana raised, fully prepared to end the Saiyan Prince's life. Every fiber of his being screams that this is the right call. Vegeta killed his friends, devastated the planet, and will only grow stronger if allowed to survive. The logical choice is clear.

Then Goku speaks. Broken, bleeding, and barely conscious, he asks Krillin to let Vegeta go. It is not a strategic request. Goku admits openly that his reasoning is selfish: he wants to fight Vegeta again. The thrill of facing someone that powerful, of pushing himself to grow even further, is something Goku cannot let go of. He is asking his best friend to spare a mass murderer so that he can have a rematch someday.

Krillin, against every rational instinct, honors his friend's wish. Vegeta drags himself into his space pod and launches into the sky, escaping Earth with nothing but his life and his wounded pride. The decision will prove to be one of the most consequential in the entire Dragon Ball saga, though no one standing on that battlefield could know it yet.

The Road to Namek

With the battle over, the survivors take stock of their losses. Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo are all dead. Kami, tied to Piccolo's life force, has also perished, taking the Earth's Dragon Balls with him. Resurrection through conventional means is impossible. Master Roshi, Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Korin arrive to collect the wounded, and the group heads to Wukong Hospital.

But Krillin offers a glimmer of hope. Since Kami is a Namekian, the planet Namek likely has its own set of Dragon Balls created by other members of his race. If they can reach Namek and find those Dragon Balls, they can wish their friends back to life. The idea takes root quickly, and when they discover that Nappa's space pod is still intact, Bulma volunteers to examine it as a potential vehicle for the journey.

The Saga Turns

This episode serves as the bridge between the Saiyan Saga and the Namek Saga, transitioning from the aftermath of Earth's most devastating battle to the promise of an interplanetary adventure. The revelation that Namek has its own Dragon Balls elegantly connects the existing plot threads: Piccolo's Namekian heritage, Kami's mysterious origins, and the need to resurrect the fallen warriors.

Goku's request to spare Vegeta is a defining character moment. It reveals the core of who Goku is: not a selfless hero in the traditional sense, but a warrior who lives for the fight. This complexity is what makes him compelling, and it sets up a rivalry with Vegeta that will evolve for the rest of the series.
