The Serpent Race's Power

The Giant Form is a transformation unique to the Serpent race, a subset of the broader Demon Clan in the Dragon Ball universe. It allows these typically small-statured demons to dramatically increase their body size and physical power, turning them from unassuming figures into towering combatants. The transformation first appeared in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, where Garlic Jr.'s three subordinates, Ginger, Nicky, and Sansho, used it to battle Goku, and Garlic Jr. himself entered an even more extreme version to face the combined might of Goku and Piccolo.

According to Daizenshuu 7, the official Dragon Ball encyclopedia, this form "raises the user's dormant power many tens of times." However, the actual multiplier depicted in games varies considerably. In Dragon Ball Z: Kyoshu! Saiyan, Garlic Jr.'s power level only increased from 2,500 to 3,500 upon transforming, suggesting a multiplier of approximately 1.4 times his base. This discrepancy between the guidebook description and game implementation has never been officially resolved.

Each member of the Serpent race who uses this form has a unique activation ritual. In the Ocean Group English dub, the Three Lords each shout a distinctive word to trigger their transformation: Ginger says "Gingerbread," Nicky says "Tutti Frutti," and Sansho says "Pepperoni" (changed to "Cheese" in the Funimation dub). These incantation-like cries add a ritualistic quality to the transformation that sets it apart from the purely willpower-driven transformations seen elsewhere in Dragon Ball.

The Makyo Star Connection

During the Garlic Jr. Saga in Dragon Ball Z, the transformation's relationship to the Makyo Star became a central plot point. The Makyo Star is the homeworld of the Serpent race, and as it approached Earth, its influence empowered Garlic Jr. and his new subordinates, the Spice Boys. Both Spice and Vinegar were able to use the Giant Form under the Makyo Star's influence, suggesting that the celestial body either enhances or partially enables the transformation for certain Serpent members.

This connection proved to be the transformation's greatest vulnerability. When Gohan destroyed the Makyo Star with a Full Power Masenko, Garlic Jr.'s Giant Form immediately collapsed. He did not merely revert to his base state; instead, he shriveled into a decrepit, withered figure before being sucked back into the Dead Zone. This implies that at least Garlic Jr.'s version of the form depended on the Makyo Star's continued existence to sustain itself.

Piccolo provided an interesting counterpoint during this saga by using his own body-altering abilities to replicate the Serpent Demon Clan's Giant Form. His imitation version corrected a key flaw in the original: while the Serpent Giant Form sacrifices speed for size and strength, Piccolo specifically noted that he had perfected his version to maintain full speed despite the size increase. Daizenshuu 6 identifies the transformations used by the Three Lords as being the same technique as Garlic Jr.'s, though Daizenshuu 7 curiously does not list them among the form's users.
