Ostrich Chicken

Race

Large flightless birds native to Earth's Spinach Wastes region, Ostrich Chickens resemble real-world cassowaries and are raised by local farmers. They appear early in Dragon Ball Z when Raditz lands near a farm that keeps them, and they serve as enemies in several Dragon Ball video games.

Flightless and Fearsome

Ostrich Chickens are enormous flightless birds that roam the wastelands of Earth in the Dragon Ball universe. Standing between six and nine feet tall, they bear a strong resemblance to cassowaries, the large and notoriously aggressive birds found in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Despite their name combining two familiar Earth birds, their size and temperament place them firmly in the category of creatures best observed from a distance.

Their natural habitat centers on the Spinach Wastes, a desolate stretch of terrain where a local farmer raises them alongside his other livestock. Their diet consists of grass, seeds, and worms, making them relatively unremarkable in their feeding habits compared to the dinosaurs and other prehistoric holdovers that populate Dragon Ball's version of Earth.

A Farmer's Flock at Ground Zero

The most memorable appearance of Ostrich Chickens in the main series comes at the very beginning of Dragon Ball Z. The farmer who witnesses Raditz's arrival on Earth, the man who famously points a shotgun at a Saiyan warrior, keeps Ostrich Chickens on his property near the Spinach Wastes. This places the birds at the literal starting point of the Saiyan Saga, though they play no role in the conflict itself.

Interestingly, Ostrich Chickens are absent from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot despite the farmer appearing in that game. A carnivorous dinosaur inhabits the area near Raditz's landing site instead, though regular chickens do appear elsewhere in the game as farm animals raised by Earthlings for their eggs.

Bestiary Staples

Ostrich Chickens enjoy their most detailed treatment in Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, where they appear as common to rare enemies depending on their variant. Three distinct types exist in the game's bestiary: the standard Ostrich Chicken found in most wasteland areas, the uncommon Sand Dodo that appears exclusively in desert regions, and the exceptionally rare Dododo.

The Dododo variant is particularly notable for its bizarre stat distribution. It possesses the lowest health of all three types at just 63 hit points, yet it is blindingly fast, almost always striking first. It awards only a single Zeni upon defeat but grants the highest experience points of any creature, and it resists every damage type. Collectors seeking to complete the full bestiary must track down all three varieties, making the Ostrich Chicken family one of the more memorable creature hunts in the game.
