Hatchiyack Saga

Saga

A gaiden OVA storyline where Dr. Lychee, the last surviving Tuffle, deploys Destron Gas generators on Earth and summons Ghost Warriors of past villains. The Z Fighters must travel to the Dark Planet to destroy Hatchiyack, a hate-powered machine that manifests as a warrior rivaling Broly in strength.

The Tuffle's Revenge

Long before the Saiyans conquered Planet Vegeta, it was called Planet Plant, home to the technologically advanced Tuffle race. The Saiyans wiped them out, stole their technology, and renamed the world after their king. Dr. Lychee was the sole Tuffle survivor, escaping to the Dark Planet at the edge of the universe. His hatred for the Saiyans festered across decades, crystallizing into a plan of total eradication.

Destron Gas and Ghost Warriors

Lychee's attack begins not with soldiers but with science. He plants Destron Gas generators at strategic points across Earth, emitting a toxin lethal to all life. Mr. Popo discovers that the planet has only hours before the gas renders it uninhabitable. Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Future Trunks scramble to destroy the generators, each location guarded by Ghost Warriors: spectral recreations of Frieza, Cooler, Turles, and Lord Slug, generated by Lychee's hatred machine. These phantoms regenerate endlessly unless defeated in the exact manner their originals died.

The Earth Saga portion plays out like a frantic race against time. Each Z Fighter tackles a different generator location, fighting through waves of Ghost Warriors while the gas slowly poisons the atmosphere. King Kai reveals the regeneration weakness, and the heroes adapt their strategies accordingly. The final generator, protected by an impenetrable energy barrier in West City, requires defeating all four Ghost Warriors simultaneously before it can be approached.

Journey to the Dark Planet

With Earth temporarily saved, the heroes pursue Dr. Lychee to the Dark Planet. Their journey takes them through hostile worlds where they crash-land, fight revived Ghost Warriors again, and gather resources to repair their ship. The Space Saga portion adds a road-trip quality to the story, with each planet presenting unique challenges before the final destination.

Hatchiyack Unleashed

On the Dark Planet, the Z Fighters discover the truth behind the Ghost Warriors. They are all generated by Hatchiyack, a supercomputer built by Dr. Lychee that runs on accumulated Tuffle hatred. Even Lychee himself is a Ghost Warrior, a spectral projection created by the machine long after his physical body perished. When Vegeta destroys the Lychee projection, the hatred energy overloads Hatchiyack's systems, and the machine manifests a physical android body of terrifying power.

Goku estimates that Hatchiyack's power may rival or even exceed Broly's, establishing the machine as one of the strongest opponents the Z Fighters have faced. Hatchiyack devastates the heroes in combat, shrugging off their individual attacks with ease. Only by combining their energy into a unified Super Saiyan assault do the five warriors manage to overwhelm the hate-fueled android and end the Tuffle threat once and for all.

A Forgotten Chapter

The Hatchiyack Saga occupies a unique niche in Dragon Ball history as a gaiden, a side story told through OVAs and video games rather than the main anime or manga. Originally released in 1993 alongside a Famicom game, the story was remade in 2010 as Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, with updated animation and a streamlined narrative that cut the Space Saga's planet-hopping in favor of a more focused confrontation on the Dark Planet.

The saga's exploration of Tuffle history adds depth to Planet Vegeta's backstory, reminding viewers that the Saiyans' conquest was built on the bones of another civilization. Dr. Lychee serves as a dark mirror to the Saiyans themselves, a survivor driven by hatred to pursue genocide against the descendants of those who wronged his people. That thematic symmetry gives the Hatchiyack Saga more narrative weight than its side-story status might suggest, making it a worthwhile curiosity for fans interested in the franchise's deeper lore.
