The Price of Every Wish

The Shadow Dragon Saga begins with a reckoning that has been building across the entire Dragon Ball timeline. When Goku and his allies attempt to summon Shenron after defeating Super 17, the Dragon Balls crack open and spew forth a torrent of black smoke. From this dark cloud emerges Black Smoke Shenron, a malevolent dragon born from decades of accumulated negative energy within the Dragon Balls.

Seven Dragons, Seven Sins

Old Kai explains the terrifying truth: every wish ever granted by Shenron generated a measure of negative energy. Before Bulma invented the Dragon Radar, the Dragon Balls would scatter and remain dormant for centuries, giving the negative energy time to dissipate naturally. But the Z Fighters have used them so frequently, and with such casual urgency, that the corruption has reached critical mass. Black Smoke Shenron ingests all seven Dragon Balls and splits into seven Shadow Dragons, each carrying one ball and a unique set of powers. They scatter across the Earth, blanketing the atmosphere in poisonous haze.

Goku takes responsibility. He sets out with Pan and the robot companion Giru to hunt down each Shadow Dragon and purify the Dragon Balls. The early encounters test different aspects of their skill. Haze Shenron poisons them with pollution, but Giru's mechanical body proves immune and helps turn the tide. Rage Shenron nearly electrocutes the pair with his Electric Slime before a fortuitous rainstorm shorts out his power. Oceanus Shenron hides behind a beautiful human disguise and wields devastating wind attacks until Pan exposes her true form. Naturon Shenron attempts the most disturbing tactic of all, absorbing Pan's body to use as both a power source and a human shield, forcing Goku to rescue his granddaughter through cleverness rather than force.

Fire and Ice

The true gauntlet begins with Nuova Shenron, the Four-Star Dragon and a warrior of genuine honor. Their battle forces Goku into Super Saiyan 4, and as the fight rages, both combatants develop a rare mutual respect. Before a winner is decided, Eis Shenron, Nuova's cruel brother, intervenes. The Three-Star Dragon ambushes them both, freezes Goku in ice, and demands that Nuova help finish him off. Nuova refuses; he finds no honor in such cowardice. Instead, he unfreezes Goku. When Eis Shenron begs for mercy after being overwhelmed, then launches a treacherous final attack that blinds Goku permanently, Nuova's brother seals his own fate. A furious Goku obliterates Eis with the Dragon Fist despite being unable to see.

Nuova offers Goku an antidote for his blindness, only to be murdered instantly by Syn Shenron, the One-Star Dragon and the most powerful of all seven. With the antidote destroyed and his sight gone, Goku faces the ultimate Shadow Dragon alone and blind.

Omega and the Final Fusion

Syn Shenron brutalizes the blinded Goku until he loses his Super Saiyan 4 transformation and collapses. Goku's family and friends rally to his defense, and Gohan, Goten, and Trunks execute a desperate plan: they pour every ounce of their Saiyan energy into Goku's body, restoring him to full-power Super Saiyan 4 with strength far exceeding his previous limits. Even blind, Goku demolishes Syn Shenron with a devastating Kamehameha.

The One-Star Dragon Ascends

But Syn Shenron clings to life. He reveals his trump card by consuming the other six Dragon Balls and transforming into Omega Shenron, a monstrosity wielding the combined powers of all seven Shadow Dragons. Goku regains his sight from the transformation's energy surge, but even so, Omega Shenron proves insurmountable. Goku exhausts his most powerful attacks to no effect and prepares to sacrifice his life in a final explosion.

Vegeta arrives just in time to stop him. With Bulma operating a Blutz Wave Generator, Vegeta regrows his tail, transforms through Great Ape, and ascends to Super Saiyan 4. The two Saiyan rivals fight side by side, but even their combined might falls short. Vegeta proposes the only remaining option: fusion. While Gohan, Goten, and Trunks hold Omega at bay, Goku and Vegeta perform the Fusion Dance and become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta.

The Strongest Warrior Who Ran Out of Time

Gogeta is magnificent. He toys with Omega Shenron, purifying the planet's negative energy by deflecting Omega's own Negative Karma Ball back at him. He forces Omega to expel six of the seven Dragon Balls. But Gogeta's fatal flaw is his personality: he inherits the playfulness of both Goku and Vegeta and wastes precious minutes showboating instead of delivering the killing blow. The fusion timer expires before he can finish the job, and Goku and Vegeta separate, horrified to find themselves back where they started.

The fight devolves into desperation. Goku swallows the Four-Star Ball to keep Omega from reaching full power, but the Shadow Dragon is still overwhelmingly strong. Repeated attempts at re-fusion fail because Goku is too drained, eventually reverting to his child form. When Nuova Shenron briefly reappears inside Goku, purified by the Saiyan's positive energy, they trick Omega into dropping his guard, but Omega possesses Nuova's body and destroys him from within.

Until We Meet Again

With all options exhausted, Omega Shenron launches a Negative Karma Ball large enough to obliterate the planet. Goku intercepts it, pouring every last scrap of energy into holding it back. He reflects on the truth at the heart of the crisis: the Dragon Balls were never meant to be used as frequently as they were. His plea seems futile as the ball detonates.

The Universal Spirit Bomb

But Goku survives. Rising from the crater, he begins gathering energy for a Spirit Bomb. Knowing that the power of Earth alone will not be enough, King Kai amplifies his call across the entire universe. Every living being contributes, creating a Universal Spirit Bomb of such immense scale that no evil can withstand it. Omega Shenron's final scream is swallowed by the blast, and the Shadow Dragon is completely annihilated. The Dragon Balls are restored to their natural state.

Shenron's Farewell

Shenron appears unsummoned. He explains that the Dragon Balls were never intended for frequent use; they were sacred objects meant to be revered in a world that did not need them. To prevent another corruption, Shenron must separate himself from Earth for one hundred years. Goku asks for one final wish: restore the Earth and her people. Shenron agrees, but requests that Goku accompany him.

Goku's goodbye tour is the emotional conclusion of the entire Dragon Ball saga. He visits Tien and Chiaotzu training by a waterfall, Yamcha fixing a car in the desert. He stops at Kame House to see an elderly Krillin and Master Roshi, sharing one last sparring match with his oldest friend. He descends to Hell to say farewell to Piccolo, assuring the Namekian that he will eventually find his way out. Then, riding on Shenron's back through golden clouds, Goku absorbs the Dragon Balls into his body, allowing his positive energy to cleanse them for good.

One hundred years later, an elderly Pan watches her great-great-grandson Goku Jr. fight Vegeta Jr. at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Both boys transform into Super Saiyans, and in the crowd, Pan catches a glimpse of an adult Goku. He smiles, waves, and disappears into the crowd. The Dragon Ball saga ends where it began: with a tournament, a Goku, and the promise that the adventure never truly stops.
