The Demon King's Pride

Demonic Will, literally translated as "Demon King's Pride," is a power-up technique unique to Dabura, the ruler of the Demon Realm during the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z. It represents the full expression of Dabura's innate combat potential as the supreme demon, a reservoir of power that he does not normally access during casual combat.

The technique first appeared during Dabura's battle with Gohan inside Babidi's spaceship. After exchanging blows for some time, Gohan challenged Dabura to show his true power, sensing that the Demon King was holding back. In response, Dabura activated Demonic Will, releasing a surge of energy accompanied by a crackling electric aura. In the anime, this lightning was depicted in blue, creating a visual parallel with Super Saiyan 2's characteristic bio-electrical discharge.

With Demonic Will active, Dabura's power rose to match Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 level, turning what had been a lopsided fight into an even contest. This is a significant benchmark, as Gohan at this point in the story was considered one of the strongest fighters in Universe 7, even though his power had diminished somewhat from its Cell Saga peak due to years of reduced training.

Video Game Depictions

The Budokai game series expanded Demonic Will into a formal transformation mechanic for Dabura. In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2, the technique produced a red electrical aura, while Budokai 3 and Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World depicted it as a black aura with electric crackling. These visual variations reflect different artistic interpretations across the game series, but the function remains consistent: Demonic Will serves as Dabura's equivalent of a Super Saiyan transformation, elevating him from his base power to his maximum.

In the Budokai games, Demonic Will is mechanically important because it is the prerequisite for Dabura's Ultimate Attack, the Darkness Sword Attack. Without activating Demonic Will first, players cannot access this finishing move, making the power-up a necessary strategic step in Dabura's combat flow. The Dragon Rush combo also changes when Demonic Will is active: normally Dabura finishes with a powerful stomach kick followed by a ground slam, but under Demonic Will he instead launches a blackish-red energy sphere at the opponent.

The technique's exclusivity to Dabura, combined with its relatively modest screen time in the anime, makes it one of the more obscure power-ups in the Dragon Ball canon. However, it serves an important narrative function by establishing that the Demon Realm's ruler possesses reserves of power that can compete with the strongest mortal fighters in Universe 7.
