The Universal Shockwave

The Explosive Wave is one of the most commonly used techniques in Dragon Ball, employed by nearly every fighter who has reached a significant power level. The user concentrates their ki and then releases it in a sudden burst from their entire body, creating an expanding shockwave that pushes away or damages everything in the immediate vicinity. It serves multiple purposes: breaking free from a grapple, clearing debris, repelling weaker opponents, or simply demonstrating overwhelming power. The size and destructive force of the wave scale directly with the user's power level.

Powering Up as a Weapon

Many of the most memorable Explosive Waves in the series occur during transformations or moments of intense rage. When a Saiyan powers up to Super Saiyan for the first time, the resulting ki burst often functions as an Explosive Wave, sending nearby rocks and debris flying. Frieza used the technique liberally on Namek, and Broly's transformations into Legendary Super Saiyan were accompanied by Explosive Waves powerful enough to reshape the landscape. Beerus, as a God of Destruction, naturally produces Explosive Waves of staggering magnitude when agitated. The technique is so fundamental that it barely registers as a named move; it is simply what happens when an extremely powerful fighter stops holding back.

Stronger Variants

Several powered-up versions of the Explosive Wave exist. The Super Explosive Wave is a charged variant with significantly greater range and damage. Nappa demonstrated one of the most dramatic versions during the Saiyan Saga, clearing an entire city with a single explosive burst of ki before the Z Fighters even arrived to face him. In video games, the Explosive Wave family of techniques often serves as a reliable area-of-effect attack, useful for punishing opponents who crowd too close. The technique's simplicity is its strength; it requires no complex hand positions, no charge time, and no verbal activation. It is raw power expressed in its most primal form.
