How It Works

The Finish Buster follows a simple but visually striking sequence. Trunks raises both hands above his head and gathers a large sphere of concentrated ki between his palms. Once the energy reaches critical mass, he swings his arms downward and hurls the sphere toward his target. The resulting impact generates a massive explosion capable of dealing serious damage.

What makes this technique interesting is its versatility. It functions as both a standalone attack and as the core projectile within the more elaborate Heat Dome Attack, where Trunks surrounds himself with a dome of energy before launching the sphere skyward at a thrown opponent.

The End of a Nightmare

The Finish Buster's most significant appearance comes at the very end of the Cell Saga, though not in the main timeline. After returning to his own ravaged future, Future Trunks tracks down Future Cell, the imperfect version of the android who had never managed to absorb the androids in that timeline. Armed with the strength he gained training alongside his father in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Future Trunks completely outclasses his opponent.

When Future Cell desperately charges a Kamehameha, Trunks doesn't even flinch. He tosses Cell into the air and unleashes the Heat Dome Attack, with the Finish Buster at its core, vaporizing Cell and finally bringing peace to his devastated world. It's one of the most cathartic moments in all of Dragon Ball Z.

Kid Trunks Goes Upside Down

In Bio-Broly, the kid version of Trunks uses the Finish Buster in a wonderfully unconventional way. While fighting Bio-Broly, he fires the attack while completely upside down. This mirrors a scene from The History of Trunks where Future Android 18 used a similar inverted energy attack against teenage Future Trunks, making it a neat visual callback across timelines.

A Video Game Favorite

The Finish Buster has appeared in an enormous number of Dragon Ball games, stretching all the way back to Super Butoden on the Super Famicom. In the Budokai Tenkaichi series, it serves as the Ultimate Blast for several versions of Trunks. The Xenoverse games made both the Finish Buster and Heat Dome Attack obtainable skills for custom characters, letting players build their own Trunks-inspired fighters.

A stronger variant called Super Finish Buster appears in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, giving Future Trunks an upgraded version befitting the RPG's progression system.
