Super Saiyan Blue

Transformation

The practical combat evolution of Super Saiyan God, created by layering the Super Saiyan transformation over a body already infused with godly ki. Where Super Saiyan God was understated and elegant, Blue is an aggressive battle form designed for overwhelming opponents with divine-level power amplified by the proven Super Saiyan multiplier.

How It Works

The logic behind Super Saiyan Blue is straightforward: if a Saiyan can access godly ki in their base form (the "Saiyan beyond God" state), then applying the Super Saiyan multiplier to that already divine base should produce something far beyond either form alone. Both Goku and Vegeta developed this transformation during their training with Whis on Beerus's planet, where they learned to master their godly ki and then layer Super Saiyan on top of it.

The form demands exceptional ki control. Godly ki by nature is difficult to manage, and combining it with the energy amplification of Super Saiyan creates a volatile mixture that can leak energy if the user's concentration slips. This is why Whis's training emphasized ki management above raw power, as the ability to contain and direct divine energy efficiently is what separates a competent Blue user from one who wastes their stamina.

The Name

The form was initially called "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan," a mouthful that Whis shortened to "Super Saiyan Blue" based on its appearance. The blue coloring distinguishes it from every other Super Saiyan stage and immediately communicates that the user is operating on a different level of energy entirely. The cyan shade is consistent across all users and has become one of the most recognizable visual elements of the Dragon Ball Super era.

Combat Applications

Super Saiyan Blue served as Goku and Vegeta's main combat transformation throughout most of Dragon Ball Super. It debuted against Golden Frieza in Resurrection 'F', where its precise energy control ultimately gave Goku the advantage when Frieza's unmastered Golden form began to drain. It was used extensively during the Universe 6 Tournament, the Goku Black arc, and the Tournament of Power.

The form's versatility was demonstrated by its ability to serve as a platform for additional techniques. Goku combined it with Kaio-ken, something that would have been fatal with any other Super Saiyan form, because Blue's controlled ki output could manage the Kaio-ken's strain. At x10 and eventually x20, Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken temporarily pushed Goku beyond the form's normal ceiling, though the physical aftermath was severe.

Vegeta's Evolution

Vegeta took the form in his own direction during the Tournament of Power, achieving Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, a deeper shade of blue with greater power output. This was Vegeta's answer to Goku's Ultra Instinct Sign, reached not through divine technique but through pure Saiyan willpower and refusal to accept his limits. In the manga, Vegeta instead developed Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, which sealed all ki inside the body to prevent energy leakage, producing a form with no visible aura but dramatically increased power.

Limitations and What Came After

For all its power, Super Saiyan Blue has clear limitations that the later arcs of Dragon Ball Super exposed. Against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, even Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken x20 was insufficient. The form operates on the principle of amplifying existing power, but when the opponent simply exists on a higher plane of strength, no amount of multiplication can close the gap. This is what drove Goku toward Ultra Instinct, a transformation that operates on fundamentally different principles than raw power amplification.

The form also consumes energy faster than Super Saiyan God alone, which is why the manga's switching technique between God and Blue proved tactically superior for long battles. Maintaining Blue at full output while fighting multiple powerful opponents in succession, as the Tournament of Power demanded, required careful energy management that not every situation allowed.

The Diverging Paths

Super Saiyan Blue ultimately served as the launchpad for Goku and Vegeta's separate journeys toward mastery. Goku pursued the angelic technique of Ultra Instinct, moving away from the Saiyan transformation framework entirely. Vegeta pursued the destructive divine path of Ultra Ego, embracing the God of Destruction philosophy under Beerus's tutelage. Both paths represent growth beyond what Blue could offer, but Blue remains the foundation that made those paths accessible. Without the precise ki control and divine energy management that Blue taught them, neither Ultra Instinct nor Ultra Ego would have been achievable.
