Mamoru Chiba / Tuxedo Mask

Out of costume, Mamoru keeps a clean-cut look: dark eyes and cropped black hair paired with a black turtleneck, indigo trousers held up by a pale brown belt, and a green jacket that finishes his usual outfit. His wardrobe shifts across the seasons, ranging from casual campus wear to a sharp black suit and a rider's jacket for the motorcycle scenes.

The Tuxedo Mask persona swaps all of that for full evening dress. He steps out in a black tailcoat trimmed with gold buttons, a red-lined cape, white gloves, a domino mask, and a top hat, armed with a slim cane and the red roses he flings at enemies. Whenever he throws himself between Sailor Moon and an incoming attack, the hat and mask are knocked loose, briefly baring his face.

Beneath a guarded, occasionally chilly exterior, Mamoru carries a deep loneliness rooted in the loss of his parents and the amnesia that followed. His bluntness can wound, yet the harsh remarks usually aim to prod people toward bettering themselves, a habit he shares with Rei.

Where Usagi is concerned, his devotion is total. Time and again he puts his own body between her and danger, shielding her even during stretches when he has forgotten who she is. Early in the series he shows a harder, more desperate streak, willing to snatch the Rainbow Crystals for himself, driven less by malice than by a hunger to recover his lost past.

A car crash on his sixth birthday killed Mamoru's parents and wiped his memory, leaving him unable to recall even his own name. Recurring dreams of a girl pleading for the Legendary Silver Crystal push him to adopt the Tuxedo Mask identity and hunt the gem himself, convinced it holds the key to his forgotten history.

He first meets Usagi in the opening episode, needling her with the nickname Bunhead, and soon comes to Sailor Moon's aid in the field. As he collects the Rainbow Crystals, their reunion into the Silver Crystal restores everyone's memories and reveals him as Prince Endymion, sworn to Princess Serenity. The Dark Kingdom then abducts and brainwashes him; freed for a moment, he is re-corrupted by Queen Beryl before dying to shield Usagi, only to be reborn afterward with no memory of any of it.

Across the later seasons his bond with Usagi is tested repeatedly. A fragment of his heart becomes the Moonlight Knight until his memories return; King Endymion's dream-warnings strain the couple during the Black Moon crisis; and his love for Usagi calls forth the Spiral Heart Moon Rod. In SuperS his tie to the Earth itself leaves him wracked with pain as ruler of the Golden Kingdom near Elysion. In the final season a shard from Nehelenia's mirror torments him before he is spirited away to Galaxia, who tears out his Star Seed; he whispers Usako as he fades, and is restored when the story ends.
