Broly is a powerful Saiyan mutant introduced in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and the son of Paragus. Exiled to the desolate planet Vampa as an infant due to King Vegeta's jealousy of his extraordinary power level, Broly spent nearly five decades in isolation before being discovered by members of the Frieza Force.
Born on Planet Vegeta around the same time as Goku and Vegeta, Broly displayed an abnormally high power level even as an infant. King Vegeta, threatened by the possibility that a low-class Saiyan child could surpass his own son, ordered Broly to be sent to the hostile planet Vampa. Paragus, furious at the king's decision, followed his son to the remote world, and the two survived together for 48 years in harsh conditions, battling the planet's dangerous fauna.
The Frieza Force soldiers Cheelai and Lemo discover Broly and Paragus on Vampa and bring them to Frieza. Recognizing Broly's immense latent power, Frieza manipulates Paragus into using Broly as a weapon against Goku and Vegeta. On Earth, Broly's Saiyan combat instincts awaken as he clashes with Vegeta, rapidly adapting to his opponent's techniques and growing stronger throughout the battle. When Paragus is killed (secretly by Frieza to trigger Broly's rage), the grief-stricken Saiyan erupts into his Legendary Super Saiyan form, becoming nearly unstoppable.
Neither Goku nor Vegeta can match Broly individually, forcing them to perform the Fusion Dance and become Gogeta. Even the fused warrior struggles initially, but Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta ultimately overwhelms Broly. Before the killing blow can land, Cheelai uses the Dragon Balls to wish Broly back to Vampa. Goku later visits Broly on the planet, offering supplies, friendship, and a promise to return for sparring. This sets up Broly as a rival and potential ally rather than a disposable villain.
Broly's defining trait is his ability to grow exponentially stronger during combat. Unlike most Saiyans who train methodically over years, Broly's power escalates in real time as his body adapts to his opponent's level. During his first battle with Vegeta, he progresses from base form to Wrathful state (channeling Great Ape power without transforming) to full Super Saiyan within minutes.
His Legendary Super Saiyan form is unique among Saiyan transformations, characterized by a massive increase in muscle mass, green-tinted energy, and a berserker state that sacrifices rational thought for raw destructive output. In this state, Broly's power rivals or exceeds that of Super Saiyan Blue, placing him among the strongest mortals in Universe 7. His fighting style is primal and unrefined but devastatingly effective, relying on overwhelming force, rapid movement, and an instinctive grasp of combat that compensates for his lack of formal training.
The Dragon Ball Super version of Broly is a deliberate reinvention of the original movie villain. Where the Z-era Broly was a one-dimensional berserker motivated by an irrational hatred of Goku, this Broly is a sympathetic figure shaped by isolation and his father's controlling nature. He is gentle by default, forming a bond with a large creature on Vampa that Paragus cruelly cuts short as part of his "training."
Broly's tragedy is that he has been used as a weapon his entire life, first by Paragus and then by Frieza. He has never had the freedom to choose his own path. The film's resolution, with Cheelai and Lemo becoming his first real friends and Goku extending an open hand rather than a closed fist, offers hope that Broly will finally get to define himself on his own terms. His continued presence in the Dragon Ball Super storyline positions him as both a foil and a parallel to Goku: two Saiyans of extraordinary power, separated by circumstance but connected by their potential for goodness.
