Biography and Story Role

Chiaotzu first appeared as a student of the Crane School alongside Tien Shinhan. Under the guidance of the Crane Hermit and Tao Pai Pai, both fighters were trained to oppose Goku and the Turtle School students. Chiaotzu entered the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, where he used his psychic abilities to manipulate matches before ultimately losing to Krillin.

After Tien broke away from the Crane School's villainous teachings, Chiaotzu followed his friend without hesitation. The two became allies of Goku and joined the Dragon Team for the battle against King Piccolo. From that point forward, Chiaotzu fought alongside the heroes in every major conflict, though his power level fell further behind with each new threat.

His most memorable moment came during the Saiyan Saga, when Chiaotzu latched onto Nappa's back and detonated his own body in a desperate self-destruct attack. The explosion had no effect on Nappa whatsoever, making Chiaotzu's death both tragic and a stark illustration of how outmatched the human fighters had become. He was later revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls.

By the time of the Cell and Buu Sagas, Chiaotzu had been effectively retired from combat. He continued to train with Tien but did not participate in the major battles, recognizing that the power gap had grown too large for his abilities to matter.
