Moonlight and Mayhem

Jackie Chun opens with his Sleepy Boy Technique, hypnotizing Goku into a deep sleep right in the middle of the ring. The countdown begins, and it looks like the match is over without another blow being thrown. Bulma saves the day by screaming "Dinner!" from the stands, and Goku snaps awake instantly, running around the arena asking where his food is.

Rock, Scissors, and Deception

Goku switches to his Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper technique, but Jackie Chun counters every variation, revealing that he trained alongside Grandpa Gohan. Goku outsmarts him by calling "Paper" and throwing a punch instead, nailing Jackie Chun between the eyes. It is the first time Jackie Chun takes a countdown in the tournament. He responds by unleashing the Thunder Shock Surprise, pumping 20,000 volts of electricity into Goku and lifting him helplessly into the air.

The Great Ape Emerges

Just as Goku is about to surrender, his eyes catch the full moon. His pupils turn red, his body begins to swell, and the Saiyan transformation takes hold. The Great Ape Goku rampages through the tournament grounds, stomping on buildings while terrified spectators flee. Jackie Chun has no choice. He powers up to his MAX Power form, muscles bulging, and fires a devastating MAX Power Kamehameha. The blast illuminates the entire island. When the light fades, Goku is nowhere to be seen. Yamcha delivers the grim news: Goku did not make it.

Desperation on Both Sides

The tonal shift in this episode is extraordinary. It begins with slapstick comedy, Goku being woken up by the promise of food, and ends with his friends weeping over his apparent death. The Great Ape transformation is terrifying precisely because Goku has no control over it. He is not a villain; he is a child whose body has betrayed him.

Roshi's Impossible Choice

Jackie Chun's decision to fire the MAX Power Kamehameha, despite Yamcha begging him not to, is one of the most dramatic moments in the original series. Roshi knows the blast could kill his own student, but a rampaging Great Ape threatens everyone at the tournament. The trembling in his hands before he fires shows just how much the decision costs him.

Transformations and Turning Points

This episode features the Great Ape transformation's second appearance and Jackie Chun's MAX Power form, both firsts within a tournament setting. The Thunder Shock Surprise is introduced as one of Roshi's most dangerous techniques. Bulma takes over the next-episode preview instead of Goku, reflecting the genuine uncertainty about whether the young hero survived.
