Nappa's rampage reaches a horrifying peak as Chiaotzu sacrifices himself in a desperate self-destruct attack, only for the Saiyan brute to emerge completely unharmed. With Earth's defenders falling one by one, Piccolo and Krillin launch a surprise counterattack.
Nappa continues his savage assault on Earth's defenders, choosing Tien Shinhan as his next target. With a single punch, Nappa severs Tien's arm, reducing one of Earth's greatest martial artists to fighting with a devastating handicap. Krillin attempts to rush to Tien's aid, but Nappa blasts a crater in the ground to cut him off, seemingly killing Chiaotzu in the process.
Chiaotzu survives, however, and latches onto Nappa's back in a last resort maneuver. Despite being smashed into rocks repeatedly, Chiaotzu refuses to let go. He telepathically says goodbye to Tien before detonating himself in a massive explosion. The sacrifice proves tragically futile. Nappa emerges from the blast completely unscathed, having raised his defenses at the final moment.
Meanwhile, Goku races along Snake Way, sensing the dire situation on Earth but unable to arrive in time. Piccolo and Krillin devise a plan to wait for Nappa to drop his guard, and when Nappa charges Tien for the killing blow, they launch a coordinated surprise attack that actually topples the Saiyan warrior. Their follow-up plan requires Gohan to fire a Masenko, but the young half-Saiyan freezes in terror at the sight of Nappa's furious face and runs for cover instead.
Chiaotzu's self-destruction is one of Dragon Ball Z's most gut-wrenching moments. His telepathic farewell to Tien carries genuine emotional weight, making the revelation that it accomplished nothing all the more devastating. Nappa's casual survival demonstrates the terrifying gap between the Saiyans and Earth's warriors.
The surprise attack by Piccolo and Krillin provides a brief glimmer of hope, successfully knocking Nappa down for the first time. But Gohan's failure to follow through exposes a critical weakness: raw power means nothing without the courage to use it. Piccolo and Krillin resort to the Tri-Form technique as their final gambit against the seemingly unstoppable Saiyan.
This episode cements Nappa as a force of pure destruction. The loss of Tien's arm and Chiaotzu's futile death raise the stakes to their highest point yet, establishing that the Saiyans operate on an entirely different level from anything Earth's fighters have faced before.
The Saban dub notably tried to soften Tien's injury by having him shout "You just wait 'till it grows back!" despite humans having no such ability. These censorship choices highlight how shocking the original content was for its era.
