Dinosaur

Race

Dinosaurs are a recurring presence throughout the Dragon Ball world, where they never went extinct and coexist alongside humans, anthropomorphic animals, and capsule cars. They appear on Earth, Namek, and several other planets, serving as everything from wild predators to household pets.

Extinction Never Happened

In the Dragon Ball universe, the mass extinction event that wiped out dinosaurs in the real world simply never occurred. According to the Dr. Slump crossover lore, Arale Norimaki traveled back in time and pushed the meteorite that would have caused the extinction back into space, saving the dinosaurs and inadvertently creating Earth's moon in the process. The result is a version of Earth where Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Pterodactyls, and various fictional species like the Ferocisaurus roam freely alongside modern civilization.

Dragon Ball's dinosaurs range enormously in size, from chicken-sized creatures to kaiju-scale beasts that tower over mountains. They exist on multiple planets beyond Earth, including Namek, Cretaceous, Mogina (before Beerus destroyed it), and even the Saiyan homeworld Sadala. In West City, people can be seen walking small theropods on leashes like dogs, and Dr. Brief keeps dinosaurs as pets at Capsule Corporation.

Gohan's Wilderness Curriculum

Dinosaurs play their most memorable role during young Gohan's survival training in the wilderness before the Saiyan invasion. Left alone by Piccolo to toughen up, Gohan found himself constantly pursued by a Ferocisaurus, a massive and aggressive theropod unique to the Dragon Ball world. At first, the creature was a terrifying threat that Gohan could barely outrun. Over time, the dynamic completely reversed. Gohan grew strong enough to slice off pieces of the Ferocisaurus's tail for food, and eventually it was the dinosaur running from him.

Earlier in the series, a young Chi-Chi decapitated a T. rex with the blade on her helmet near Fire Mountain, one of the first hints that even non-fighter characters in Dragon Ball's world possess extraordinary capabilities. During Goku and Krillin's training under Master Roshi, being chased by a large dinosaur was a daily part of their morning milk delivery routine, building their speed and endurance for the World Martial Arts Tournament.

Pets, Props, and Panic

Beyond their role as wild obstacles, dinosaurs are woven into the fabric of everyday life in Dragon Ball's world. In Monster Carrot's village, they serve as beasts of burden and transportation. In Satan City, Gohan and Goten own a pet pterosaur named Chobi, whose kidnapping by a greedy circus promoter becomes an entire subplot during the Great Saiyaman Saga. During the Cell Games panic, two dinosaurs in business suits can be seen among the fleeing crowds, a visual gag that perfectly captures how normalized these creatures are in Dragon Ball society.

Notable dinosaur moments include the Ferocisaurus that trained Gohan through sheer terror, the Namekian dinosaurs that Bulma encountered on Planet Namek, the friendly Apatosaurus that Gohan befriended (and that was later eaten by the Ferocisaurus), and Chobi the pterosaur whose family briefly attacked Satan City. Beerus himself once claimed he visited Earth long ago and wiped out the dinosaurs because they were rude to him, though the species clearly recovered in the time since.
