Majin (Demon Realm Race)

Race

The Demon Realm Race represents the native inhabitants of the Demon Realm, a parallel dimension within the Dragon Ball cosmology. These beings, sometimes referred to as Makaioshin or simply demons, possess inherent dark magical abilities and exist outside the jurisdiction of the gods who govern the mortal universe. Their king, Dabura, was one of the most powerful entities encountered during the Buu Saga.

Born on the Other Side of Creation

The Demon Realm exists as a dark mirror to the mortal universe. Where the Kais oversee the living world from their Sacred World, the Demon Realm operates under its own rules, governed by its own hierarchy of powerful beings. The inhabitants of this dimension are collectively classified as Majin, a term that in this context refers specifically to demonic or magical beings rather than creatures under Babidi's spell.

These Demon Realm natives vary enormously in appearance, from roughly humanoid to monstrous. What unites them is their connection to dark magical energy, an innate power source distinct from the ki used by mortal fighters. This magical energy allows them to perform feats that go beyond conventional combat techniques, including dimensional travel, matter manipulation, and mind control.

The Hierarchy of Darkness

The Demon Realm operates under a rigid power structure. At its peak sits the Demon King, a title held by Dabura during the events of Dragon Ball Z. Below the king exist various tiers of demons, ranging from powerful demon gods to lesser creatures who serve as foot soldiers. In the expanded media, particularly Super Dragon Ball Heroes, this hierarchy is explored in greater depth, with characters like Towa and Mechikabura occupying significant positions of power within the Demon Realm's ruling class.

When the Veil Between Worlds Thinned

The Demon Realm's most significant intersection with the main Dragon Ball storyline occurred through Dabura's alliance with Babidi. The dark wizard needed powerful servants to protect him while he worked to revive Majin Buu, and Dabura, already one of the strongest beings in existence, was placed under the Majin spell. His power at the time was said to be comparable to Cell at his perfect form, making him a serious threat to the Z Fighters.

Dabura demonstrated unique abilities tied to his Demon Realm heritage, most notably his ability to turn anything he spat upon into stone. This petrification power was instantaneous and seemingly permanent unless Dabura himself was killed. He used it to devastating effect against Piccolo and Krillin during the early stages of the Buu Saga, transforming both warriors into stone statues.

Towa, Mira, and the Dark Empire

In the expanded Dragon Ball media, particularly Dragon Ball Online and Super Dragon Ball Heroes, the Demon Realm plays a much larger narrative role. Towa, a brilliant scientist and sister of Dabura, becomes a major antagonist alongside her creation Mira, an artificial demon designed to be the ultimate warrior. Together, they lead campaigns to alter history and gather energy for the Demon Realm's ambitions, forming the backbone of the Dark Empire storyline.

Dark Gods and Forgotten Kings

The culture of the Demon Realm is defined by power and domination. Unlike the benevolent Kais who seek to nurture and protect the mortal universe, the Demon Realm's rulers view the living world as a resource to be exploited or conquered. Their magical traditions emphasize destructive power, manipulation, and the accumulation of dark energy.

In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, the ancient Demon King Mechikabura is revealed as a predecessor to Dabura, a being of immense power who was sealed away eons ago. His attempted return drives much of the Dark Demon Realm Mission storyline, adding historical depth to the Demon Realm's lore and suggesting that its civilization stretches back millions of years.

Notable Members

Dabura remains the most recognizable Demon Realm native in the main canon, but the expanded roster includes Towa, whose genius rivals that of any scientist in the mortal universe; Mira, her artificial creation who develops his own sense of identity over time; and Mechikabura, the primordial Demon King whose power dwarfs even Dabura's. Shula, a demon king from the original Dragon Ball series, also represents an earlier, less developed depiction of Demon Realm inhabitants from when the franchise was still finding its mythological footing.
