A Kamehameha variant where the user controls the beam's trajectory after firing, curving it around obstacles or redirecting it to strike opponents who attempt to dodge.
The Bending Kamehameha fires like a standard Kamehameha but the user maintains active control over the beam's path through concentration and ki manipulation. This allows the wave to curve, arc, or change direction entirely mid-flight. The degree of control depends on the user's skill and focus. A well-executed Bending Kamehameha can navigate around physical obstacles, pursue a dodging opponent, or strike from an unexpected angle.
Goku first uses the technique to cause an avalanche against Ninja Murasaki during the Red Ribbon Army Saga, demonstrating early creativity in applying the Kamehameha beyond a straight-line blast. His most impactful use comes during the battle against King Piccolo, where he curves the beam to strike the Demon King directly in the head from an angle he couldn't defend.
Against Raditz in early DBZ, Goku attempts a Bending Kamehameha but the Saiyan warrior blocks it without difficulty. During his journey to Namek, Goku fires curving Kamehameha waves inside the gravity training ship to build his strength and control. Cell demonstrates a similar ability during the Cell Games, curving a Kamehameha that Goku tried to redirect upward to avoid destroying the Earth. Krillin also uses a bending variation against Garlic Jr., combining it with his Scattering Bullet technique for a multi-directional assault.
The Bending Kamehameha transforms the Kamehameha from a predictable linear attack into something opponents cannot simply sidestep. Its value lies entirely in the element of surprise and the user's ability to outthink their opponent in real time. As fighters grew stronger and faster throughout the series, the technique became less prominent since most high-level combatants can react to energy attacks regardless of their trajectory. Still, it remains a testament to Goku's inventive approach to martial arts.
