A corrupting sorcery practiced by members of the Demon Realm Race that forcibly infuses targets with dark energy, boosting their power while bending them toward violence and obedience.
Dark Magic is a specialized branch of sorcery wielded by members of the Demon Realm Race, most prominently the scientist Towa, the ancient wizard Demigra, and the Demon King Dabura. It operates by channeling dark energy into a chosen target, artificially inflating their combat power while simultaneously amplifying their aggressive tendencies. The technique first appeared during the Time Breakers' campaign to rewrite history in the Xenoverse storyline, where Towa and Demigra corrupted warriors across multiple eras to destabilize the timeline.
The spell comes in several distinct forms. Towa's version works by transferring a portion of Mira's energy into the subject, which strengthens their latent hostility without granting the caster full control. Demigra's variant is considerably more invasive. He can project his own power into a target and assume direct command of their actions, effectively turning them into puppets. His wormholes also passively spread a diluted form of the magic to anyone who passes through them, though this lesser contamination cannot establish direct control.
The magic manifests in escalating stages. The basic Villainous Mode produces red eyes and a shadowy aura, progressively deepening through four stages of corruption. At its most advanced, the Supervillain transformation completely alters the target's physiology, bleaching their skin to a silvery white, turning their eyes hot pink, and inscribing the broken infinity symbol on their forehead. This extreme version, developed by Towa, works by shaving off a portion of the target's own life force to fuel the transformation, making it especially dangerous for both caster and subject.
Throughout the Xenoverse timeline, Dark Magic was deployed against an enormous number of fighters from across Dragon Ball history. One of its most remarkable properties is the ability to grant capabilities that a target would never possess on their own. When Mr. Satan was corrupted, he gained the ability to fly, fire ki blasts, and use techniques like Spirit Explosion, feats that are completely beyond his natural limitations. Similarly, a corrupted Raditz was able to dodge attacks and escape holds that would have killed him in the unaltered timeline.
Targets under the Supervillain enhancement also gain access to Demigra's personal techniques, including Bloody Sauce, Rage Saucer, Marbling Drop, and Gigantic Ki Blast. This makes even relatively weak fighters into serious threats when operating under the spell's influence.
An interesting exception involves godly ki. Under normal circumstances, Villainous Mode cannot affect deities or those who possess divine energy. However, the unfinished Supervillain power-up state proved capable of empowering Super Saiyan Rose Goku Black and Future Zamasu during the events depicted in the Super Pack 4 DLC, suggesting that the Supervillain variant operates on different principles than standard Villainous Mode.
Dabura inherited the ability to use Dark Magic from his sister Towa, including her Supervillain spell. He proved powerful enough to control fighters like Future Jiren and orchestrated a complex revenge scheme against the Time Patrol by gathering damage energy across multiple altered timelines. Fu, as Towa's genetic offspring, also demonstrated the ability to cast the Supervillain spell, though his motivations were experimental rather than malicious.
Despite its potency, Dark Magic is not without vulnerabilities. Most targets remain unaware they are under its influence, but perceptive allies can detect the personality shifts and unusual behavior it causes. Characters such as Chronoa, Elder Kai, and Xeno Trunks can sense the dark energy affecting corrupted individuals, allowing the Time Patrol to identify and respond to contaminated timelines.
The spell can be broken through sufficiently powerful attacks or through moments of extreme emotional clarity on the part of the victim. Strong-willed individuals may resist its influence partially, and the magic's hold weakens when the caster is defeated or incapacitated. The Demon Realm Fruit variant, which Towa modified to test early Supervillain states on Turles and Lord Slug, proved to be somewhat unstable since it relied on consuming a corrupted fruit rather than direct magical application.
Perhaps the most significant limitation is that some Demon Gods who received their power from Mechikabura lost access to their enhanced forms after he was sealed away, demonstrating that dark power granted through external sources can be revoked. This suggests that Dark Magic's permanence depends heavily on the continued existence and power of its original source.
