This fusion granted him abilities that transcend the normal capabilities of the Supreme Kais, including the power to reach deeper into a person's latent energy than any Namekian elder or magical catalyst could manage.

The ritual itself is divided into two distinct phases. During the first phase, lasting approximately five hours, Old Kai performs a ceremonial dance around the seated recipient. This portion of the process appears almost comical to observers, and multiple spectators during Gohan's ritual grew bored and wandered away. The second phase requires both Old Kai and the recipient to sit facing each other in a meditative posture for roughly twenty hours. During this extended meditation, Old Kai channels his mystical energy into the recipient, gradually coaxing out layers of dormant power that would otherwise remain permanently inaccessible.

Future Shin, the Supreme Kai of Trunks's timeline, used the same ceremony to unlock Future Trunks's dormant power and simultaneously appoint him as an official Supreme Kai apprentice. This dual purpose granted Future Trunks not only a significant power boost but also healing abilities, suggesting that the ritual carries spiritual significance beyond mere combat enhancement.

Old Kai's willingness to perform the ritual was motivated by gratitude. After being freed from imprisonment within the Z Sword, where he had been sealed for millions of years, Old Kai agreed to unleash Gohan's power. Goku sweetened the deal by promising Old Kai a kiss from a beautiful woman, a detail that was conveniently forgotten in the chaos that followed.

The technique's greatest limitation is practical rather than mystical. During the Universe Survival Saga, Old Kai offered to perform the ritual on Goku, and Goku was eager to accept. However, Shin pointed out that the Tournament of Power was approaching too quickly for the lengthy ceremony to be completed. This time constraint highlights why Old Kai's Unlock Ability, despite being one of the most powerful enhancement techniques in the entire series, has only been used on a handful of individuals.

In the Xenoverse video game series, Elder Kai performs a version of the ritual for the player's Time Patroller character, granting them access to the Ultimate form. The dance portion of the ritual became something of a running joke within the games, eventually appearing as an emote that players can learn and perform themselves, purely for entertainment with no actual power-unlocking effect.
