Potara are sacred earrings worn by Supreme Kais that possess the extraordinary ability to fuse two individuals into a single being. Old Kai provided them to Goku as a last resort against Super Buu, leading to the birth of Vegito, one of the most powerful warriors in Dragon Ball history.
Potara earrings are standard accessories for all Supreme Kais and their apprentices, serving primarily as symbols of divine office. Beyond their ceremonial function, these earrings carry two remarkable properties: they grant the wearer the ability to use Time Rings, and they enable fusion between any two individuals who each wear one earring on opposite ears.
The fusion mechanic is elegantly simple. When two people each put on a single Potara earring on opposite ears, an irresistible magnetic force draws them together until their bodies connect and merge. There is no dance to learn, no power levels to equalize, and no risk of failure from poor technique. The earrings handle the entire process automatically, making Potara fusion the most reliable method available in an emergency.
For a long time, Potara fusion was believed to be permanent for everyone. This understanding changed during Dragon Ball Super, when Gowasu revealed that permanence only applies when at least one of the fused individuals holds the rank of Supreme Kai. For ordinary mortals, the fusion lasts approximately one hour before the earrings' power dissipates and the individuals separate. This was the retroactive explanation for why Vegito defused inside Super Buu's body during the original series, though the exact cause remains somewhat ambiguous since Buu's internal atmosphere may have also played a role.
Akira Toriyama originally conceived the Potara fusion as a way to merge Goku and Vegeta without stepping on the Fusion Dance, which was being featured in the concurrent Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn film. The earrings provided a narratively distinct path to achieve the same dramatic result.
The most celebrated Potara fusion is Vegito, born when Goku and Vegeta donned the earrings to face Super Buu after he had absorbed Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks. Vegito demonstrated overwhelming superiority, toying with the powered-up Buu even while deliberately allowing himself to be absorbed as part of a rescue strategy. His cocky personality blended Goku's playfulness with Vegeta's pride, creating a warrior who was as entertaining as he was devastating.
Vegito returned during the Future Trunks Saga of Dragon Ball Super to combat Fused Zamasu, the Potara fusion of Goku Black and Future Zamasu. This time, Vegito fought as a Super Saiyan Blue, unleashing staggering power against the corrupted god. However, the fusion ended prematurely, well before the full hour, because the immense energy output of Super Saiyan Blue drained the Potara's sustaining power too quickly. Gowasu theorized that Vegito Blue was simply too powerful for the earrings to maintain.
Fused Zamasu himself represents one of the most unsettling Potara fusions in the series. Because Goku Black was a mortal body inhabited by a god's soul while Future Zamasu possessed true immortality, their fusion created an inherently unstable being. In the anime, damage to the mortal half caused grotesque mutations that the immortal half could not properly regenerate, leading to a body that progressively decayed even as it refused to die.
During the Tournament of Power, Caulifla and Kale of Universe 6 fused into Kefla using Potara earrings provided by their Supreme Kai. Even in base form, Kefla's power was so immense that she overwhelmed a fatigued Super Saiyan God Goku, who admitted he could not even sense a limit to her energy. She ultimately pushed Goku to reawaken Ultra Instinct Sign, demonstrating the incredible ceiling that Potara fusion can reach even with fighters who lack the extreme individual power of Goku and Vegeta.
Several important rules govern Potara fusion beyond the basic one-hour mortal time limit. If a living person fuses with a deceased one, the resulting being will be alive. If the fused being dies, they remain fused even in death. Both individuals retain memories of the fusion after defusing, and may even access some of their partner's memories. Wearing two earrings on the same ear will not trigger fusion; they must be on opposite ears between two separate people.
The fusion can end prematurely in specific circumstances. Removing or destroying the earrings will cause a temporary fusion to split apart, though it has no effect on permanent fusions involving Supreme Kais. The internal atmosphere of a Majin can also disrupt the fusion under certain conditions, as demonstrated when Shin and Kibito deliberately allowed Buu to absorb their Kibito Kai form in order to defuse, exploiting a special gas within Buu that reversed the merge. However, this atmospheric disruption does not work universally, since Kid Buu was able to absorb Kibito Kai in Dragon Ball Heroes without triggering defusion.
If one of the fusees is already transformed at the moment of fusion, the resulting being cannot power down from that form. This carries real consequences: Fused Zamasu was permanently locked into Super Saiyan Rose because Goku Black was using that form when they merged, and Old Kai warned that sustained Super Saiyan states during Potara fusion can shorten the fused being's lifespan due to the ongoing physical strain.
Like the Fusion Dance, Potara fusions are vulnerable to the Forced Spirit Fission technique, which can tear apart the individual spirits composing the fused warrior. This gives fighters like Vegeta a potential countermeasure against any type of fusion, making what was once considered an unbreakable bond something that can be forcibly undone.
