Super Saiyan Rose

Transformation

The divine counterpart to Super Saiyan Blue, achieved when a being with an inherently godly soul transforms into a Super Saiyan using a Saiyan body. Where mortal Saiyans produce blue energy when combining Super Saiyan with godly ki, a true god produces the distinctive rose-pink coloring that gives this form its name. It was first demonstrated by Goku Black, the fallen Kai Zamasu who had stolen Goku's body through a wish on the Super Dragon Balls.

A God in a Saiyan's Body

Zamasu was a North Kai apprentice in Universe 10 whose growing hatred of mortals led him down a path of destruction. After encountering Goku and being humiliated by a mortal's strength, Zamasu's worldview calcified into absolute contempt for non-divine life. Using the Super Dragon Balls, he wished to swap bodies with Goku, gaining the Saiyan's physical form while retaining his own divine soul. This fusion of a god's consciousness with a Saiyan's biology is what makes Super Saiyan Rose possible.

When Goku Black (as Zamasu in Goku's body came to be known) first transformed into a Super Saiyan, the result was not the golden hair of a standard transformation or the blue of a god-ki-infused one. Instead, the energy manifested as a vivid pink, reflecting the divine nature of the soul powering the Saiyan body. Goku Black himself named it "Rose," presenting it with the theatrical flair that characterized his divine arrogance.

Why Pink Instead of Blue

Akira Toriyama designed the form as a deliberate contrast to Super Saiyan Blue. The color distinction communicates the fundamental difference between the two forms: Blue is produced by a mortal reaching up toward divine power, while Rose is produced by a divine being reaching down into mortal power. The pink coloring was specifically chosen to be visually distinct while maintaining the elegant, refined aesthetic that Toriyama felt suited a god's transformation. In an interview, Toriyama stated that he envisioned Goku Black transforming into "a Super Saiyan of a slightly different color," and the animation team developed the rose-pink palette from that direction.

Combat and Ability

Super Saiyan Rose matches Super Saiyan Blue in raw power output, which is consistent with both forms being divine versions of Super Saiyan achieved through different pathways. During their battles in the Future Trunks arc, Goku Black in Rose was able to fight Goku in Blue on roughly equal terms. The balance shifted back and forth as both fighters adapted to each other, but neither form demonstrated a clear inherent advantage over the other.

Where Rose distinguished itself was in ki manipulation. Goku Black demonstrated exceptional control over his divine energy, creating constructs such as an energy blade (the "Violent Fierce God Slicer") that could extend and reshape during combat. This fine ki control reflected Zamasu's nature as a trained deity who had spent centuries developing his energy manipulation skills before acquiring a Saiyan body.

The Anime and Manga Divide

The anime and manga present slightly different explanations for Rose. In the anime, Rose is described as the first Super Saiyan form of a divine Saiyan, meaning it occupies the same tier as standard Super Saiyan but with divine ki. In the manga, Rose is presented more explicitly as the SSGSS equivalent for a god, making it a direct parallel to Blue rather than a divine Super Saiyan 1. Both interpretations arrive at the same practical result (Rose equals Blue in power), but they differ in the mechanical framework used to explain why.

Legacy and Variations

When Goku Black fused with his future timeline counterpart (Future Zamasu) using the Potara earrings, the resulting Fused Zamasu retained access to Super Saiyan Rose. The fused entity's Rose form was significantly more powerful than Goku Black's individual version, combining the power of two divine beings in a single body. Fused Zamasu in Rose was one of the most dangerous opponents the Z Fighters faced in Dragon Ball Super, requiring the combined efforts of Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks to challenge.

Further Developments in Heroes

Super Dragon Ball Heroes expanded the Rose concept with additional power stages including Rose 2, Rose 3, and Rose Full Power. These variants apply the same numbered progression used by standard Super Saiyan to the divine Rose form, creating increasingly powerful states that Goku Black and Zamasu-related characters can access in the Heroes continuity. While these variants have not appeared in the mainline anime or manga, they represent the logical extension of the typing system to Rose's unique energy signature.
