Rei Hino / Sailor Mars

Rei wears her long, straight black hair with a purple gloss above matching purple eyes. She is most often seen in her red-and-white priestess robes or her school uniform, the winter version dark gray with red trim and the summer one a short-sleeved white top tied with a dark red ribbon. Her casual wardrobe shifts across the series, from a teal jacket and purple skirt in early seasons to a blue shirt and red vest from the third season onward.

As Sailor Mars she wears a white armored leotard, a dark red collar bearing a single white stripe, a dark red choker, and a dark red skirt over a puffed white belt, finished with a purple chest bow, a red back bow, and glossy red heels. Her white gloves end in red bands below the elbow, and a gold tiara with a red oval gem sits at her brow. The Super Sailor Mars upgrade swaps the brooch gem for a red heart, adds a starred choker and translucent shoulder pads, and lengthens the back bow.

Rei is a spirited, boy-chasing priestess with dreams of singing, modeling, voice acting, and one day marriage. She shows affection oddly, needling Usagi or teasing Yuichirou, and her rocky rapport with Usagi often erupts into arguments that leave the younger girl stung. She even confesses that she doubts Usagi is fit to lead, yet her loyalty never wavers and she is frequently closer to Usagi than the others are. She attends a separate private Catholic school run by nuns and works the Hikawa Shrine alongside her grandfather, its head priest.

Rei debuts in the tenth episode, scolding her grandfather and drawing admiration from Usagi's group for her looks. Sensing Jadeite's evil at the shrine, she accidentally wards Usagi with an ofuda, and townsfolk wrongly blame her for the wave of disappearances, souring her temper. After her fire confirms Jadeite is behind the vanishings, she is dragged into another realm and seized by the monster Kigaan; as she struggles the mark of Mars flares on her forehead, and with Luna's pen she transforms for the first time and destroys the creature with Fire Soul.

Through the first season she and Usagi trade jabs constantly, Rei insisting she would make the better leader, yet the two share genuine respect, and Usagi even trusts her with the Moon Stick. Rei briefly dates Mamoru until his identity as Tuxedo Mask and Usagi's awakening as Princess Serenity end it. In the season finale she is the last of the guardians to fall, taking down two of the DD Girls with a final Fire Soul before dying, then returning as a spirit to urge Usagi onward. Like the others, she is reborn afterward with no memory of her past.

In Sailor Moon R she regains her powers against Ail and An, later unleashing Fire Soul Bird when a Cardian destroys the music sheets she worked so hard to write. Her rivalry with the Black Moon Clan centers on Koan, whose dark fire repeatedly clashes with her own, until Rei helps convince the villain to let go of Rubeus so Sailor Moon can purify her. In the S season she suffers early visions of an approaching darkness and becomes one of the first victims of the Death Busters, and her feelings for Yuichirou surface as she confronts Daimon such as Toden and Soiya alongside the outer guardians. By Sailor Stars she is the first person Usagi confides in about Mamoru's silence, worrying openly over how much her friend must endure.
