Beerus' Race

Race

The unnamed species of the God of Destruction Beerus, these purple feline humanoids resemble hairless Sphynx cats and hold positions among the most powerful beings in the multiverse. Beerus and his twin brother Champa are the only confirmed members in the main series.

The Cat That Toriyama Owned

Beerus' race consists of purple, hairless, feline humanoids who bear a striking resemblance to the Sphynx cat breed. This is no coincidence: Akira Toriyama owned a Sphynx cat, and the breed directly inspired Beerus's design when the character was created for the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The species has no official name; "Beerus' race" is a fan designation, though Oolong once referred to Beerus as a "Catman" upon first seeing him.

Physically, they are roughly human-sized with lean, athletic builds, large pointed ears, and long tails. Their skin is purple, and they appear to be completely hairless. Despite their feline appearance, they exhibit a range of behaviors both cat-like and distinctly humanoid. Beerus sleeps for extraordinarily long periods, sometimes decades at a time, and displays the kind of moody, imperious temperament one might expect from a very powerful cat. Their diet is omnivorous, and both known members share an intense appreciation for food, though their tastes differ considerably. Beerus is a discerning gourmand who became enamored with Earth's cuisine, while Champa gravitates toward quantity over quality.

Twin Gods of Destruction

The two confirmed members of this race hold some of the most powerful positions in the Dragon Ball multiverse. Beerus serves as the God of Destruction for Universe 7, the primary universe of the series, while his twin brother Champa holds the same title for Universe 6. Together, they are the only known pair of twin siblings serving as Gods of Destruction across linked universes, and their sibling rivalry is a recurring source of both comedy and conflict in Dragon Ball Super.

Beerus's introduction in Battle of Gods fundamentally changed the power dynamics of the series. He arrived on Earth seeking the Super Saiyan God of prophecy and proved to be overwhelmingly stronger than anyone the Z Fighters had ever faced. Even after Goku achieved Super Saiyan God form, Beerus revealed he had been using only a fraction of his power. This established a new ceiling for the franchise and launched the Dragon Ball Super era, with Beerus and his attendant angel Whis becoming central figures in the ongoing story.

Champa, by contrast, is physically rounder and shorter-tempered than his brother. The rivalry between the two led directly to the Tournament of Destroyers, a competition between Universe 6 and Universe 7 that introduced major characters including Hit, Cabba, and the Saiyan women of Universe 6. During the Tournament of Power, both brothers were forced to confront the possibility of their universe's erasure, a humbling experience for beings who had spent millions of years as the ultimate authority in their respective domains.

Mysteries of a Nameless Species

Almost nothing is known about Beerus' race beyond the two brothers themselves. Their homeworld has never been named or shown. Whether other members of the species exist somewhere in the multiverse, whether the race is naturally powerful or Beerus and Champa achieved their strength through their roles as Gods of Destruction, and whether the species has any cultural identity beyond what the twins display individually: all of these remain unanswered questions.

Dyspo, a Pride Trooper from Universe 11, bears a visual resemblance to Beerus and Champa, prompting Champa himself to comment on the similarity during the Tournament of Power. However, Dyspo appears more rabbit-like than cat-like, with different teeth structure and no confirmed connection to the species. In Dragon Ball Heroes, a young member of the race named Shandy appears as a God of Destruction hero avatar, resembling Beerus but with larger eyes and purple pupils. The scarcity of members makes this one of Dragon Ball's most exclusive and enigmatic species, known entirely through its two most prominent members and the enormous impact they have had on the story.
