Training on the Road Saga

Saga

After collecting the Dragon Balls and reuniting with his grandfather Gohan at Fortuneteller Baba's palace, young Goku sets out alone to train in the wilderness. Without the Flying Nimbus, he travels on foot, saving villages from criminals, battling the martial artist Sky Dragon, and encountering Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu for the first time as he prepares for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament.

A Boy and the Open Road

With the Dragon Balls scattered and his grandfather returned to the Other World, Goku stands at a crossroads. Master Roshi delivers his final assignment before the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament: Goku must leave behind the comfort of the Flying Nimbus and travel the world on foot, seeking new challenges and experiences that no controlled training environment could provide. It is a deceptively simple command that forces the young Saiyan into the unpredictable wilderness of Earth.

Villages Under Siege

Goku's journey quickly proves anything but quiet. He encounters a girl named Chao whose village lives in terror of two criminals, Terror and Plague, who wield a mystical gourd capable of trapping people inside. Goku dispatches them with characteristic directness, freeing the villagers and moving on before anyone can properly thank him. It is the first of many stops where his wandering intersects with ordinary people in extraordinary trouble.

The Chin-Star School and Sky Dragon

Goku befriends Chin Taiken, a student of the Chin-Star School, and agrees to take his place in a formal martial arts match against the formidable Sky Dragon at King Wonton's Royal Match. The fight tests Goku's adaptability against a more disciplined opponent, and his victory earns the Chin-Star School its honor back. These encounters sharpen Goku in ways that repetitive drills never could.

Demons, Scammers, and a Long Swim

The road takes darker turns when Goku descends into the underworld to rescue Princess Misa from the demon tyrant Shula, sealing the portal that allows demons to cross into the living world. Later, he stumbles upon Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu running a protection racket with the monster InoShikaCho, pretending to defeat the creature for money. Goku exposes the scam, setting the stage for a rivalry that will define the next tournament arc. Three years pass before Goku meets Fortuneteller Baba again, saves a fox named Konkichi from thugs, and ultimately swims across the entire planet to reach the tournament registration on time.

Battles Without a Ring

The Training on the Road Saga replaces tournament brackets with real-world stakes. Goku's fight against Terror and Plague is less about power and more about resourcefulness, as the mystical gourd presents a threat that raw strength alone cannot solve. His battle with Sky Dragon at King Wonton's Royal Match introduces a semiformal combat setting where reputation and school honor hang in the balance, forcing Goku to fight with discipline rather than instinct.

The descent into the Demon Realm to face Shula represents one of young Goku's most atmospheric encounters. He fights through an underworld populated by demonic creatures, rescues Princess Misa, and seals the gateway between worlds. It is a preview of the larger cosmic threats he will face as an adult, compressed into a filler arc that punches above its weight.

Perhaps the most consequential encounter is his clash with Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu over the InoShikaCho scam. Though it ends without a proper fight, the tension between Goku and Tien becomes the emotional engine of the entire Tien Shinhan Saga that follows. Their first meeting is adversarial, rooted in Tien's willingness to deceive and Goku's refusal to tolerate it.

Foundations for What Comes Next

The Training on the Road Saga is anime-only content drawn from the final four episodes of the broader Fortuneteller Baba Saga, but its impact on the series is genuine. It introduces Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu before their formal debut at the tournament, giving audiences a first impression of Tien as morally compromised before his redemption arc begins. It also demonstrates Roshi's philosophy that real growth comes from lived experience, not controlled sparring sessions.

For Goku, these episodes represent his transition from a gifted child to a well-traveled young martial artist. By the time he arrives at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, he has fought demons, criminals, and professional martial artists across the globe. The road itself becomes his teacher, and the lessons he absorbs here carry forward into every saga that follows.
