Milky Cannon

Technique

Captain Ginyu's signature energy attack, a powerful purple energy wave fired from one outstretched hand. It hits hard enough to carve massive craters into Namek's surface.

The Captain's Personal Arsenal

The Milky Cannon is Captain Ginyu's primary energy attack, distinct from his more famous Body Change technique. To perform it, Ginyu extends one hand forward, palm open, and releases a concentrated purple energy wave. Despite its somewhat whimsical name, the technique packs serious destructive power, leaving massive craters in Namek's landscape each time it connects. The purple coloring of the blast matches Ginyu's skin and the general color scheme of the Ginyu Force, giving it a visual identity tied to its user.

Unlike many villain techniques in Dragon Ball Z, the Milky Cannon is not a finishing move or an ultimate attack. It is a practical combat tool that Ginyu fires repeatedly and from various angles, more like a soldier's reliable sidearm than a doomsday weapon.

Battling Goku on Namek

Ginyu used the Milky Cannon extensively during his fight against Goku on Planet Namek. When Goku arrived to rescue his friends from the Ginyu Force, he and the Captain squared off in what became one of the saga's most strategic battles. Ginyu fired multiple Milky Cannons at Goku, each one gouging the Namekian terrain. In the anime, Ginyu also fired a warning shot at his subordinate Jeice, blasting a Milky Cannon past him to make it clear that Jeice should not interfere with the fight.

The technique ultimately proved insufficient against Goku's power, which led Ginyu to resort to his true signature move: the Body Change. The Milky Cannon's failure against a stronger opponent was what pushed Ginyu to make his desperate gambit, swapping bodies with Goku rather than trying to outfight him conventionally.

Ginyu's Legacy in Games

The Milky Cannon has become a fixture of Captain Ginyu's moveset across Dragon Ball video games. It appears in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, Raging Blast games, Xenoverse, Xenoverse 2, and Dragon Ball Legends. In the Xenoverse titles, it is available as a learnable Super Skill for custom characters, and it is also associated with Nappa in certain game entries.

Several variations of the technique exist in the games. Galaxy Dynamite is a rapid-fire version where Ginyu launches multiple blasts in quick succession. Dynamite Pressure is a variant he uses while occupying Goku's body. The Milky Cannon may not be the most famous technique in Dragon Ball, but it perfectly captures Ginyu's character: a professional warrior who takes pride in his craft and always leads with force before resorting to trickery.
