Saiyan Power

Technique

The Saiyan racial trait that increases a warrior's strength after recovering from severe injury or intense battle. Also known as Zenkai, it is one of the most exploited abilities in the franchise.

The Zenkai Advantage

Saiyan Power is the genetic gift that makes the Saiyan race the most dangerous warriors in the universe. After recovering from severe injuries or grueling combat, a Saiyan's body adapts to whatever nearly destroyed it, becoming stronger, faster, and more resistant to the same kind of damage in the future. The more devastating the injury, the more dramatic the improvement. It is an evolutionary mechanism that turns every defeat into a stepping stone.

The ability works through a combination of physical healing and instinctual learning. The Saiyan's mind and body imprint on the experience of being damaged, rapidly incorporating countermeasures that make prolonged battles increasingly favorable. Accessing godly ki enhances the process considerably, allowing recovery in seconds and producing much larger power spikes even from minor struggles.

Vegeta's Numbers Game on Namek

Nobody exploits Saiyan Power more shamelessly than Vegeta during the Namek Saga. After healing from his fight with Goku on Earth, his power level climbs from 18,000 to 24,000. On Namek, he deliberately gets beaten within an inch of his life multiple times, healing in tanks between rounds to stack the boosts. After Monster Zarbon nearly kills him, Vegeta recovers strong enough to kill Zarbon outright. After Recoome brutalizes him, the next healing session pushes him to match First Form Frieza's power level of 530,000.

He even convinces Krillin to blast him with a near-fatal wound, then has Dende heal him, hoping the boost will be enough to challenge Frieza's Final Form. It works well enough for Vegeta to track Frieza's movements for a time, but the tyrant is simply on another level entirely.

Meanwhile, Goku's own Saiyan Power journey is even more dramatic. His power jumps from 90,000 after gravity training to 3,000,000 after healing from his battle with the Ginyu Force. That single recovery produces the warrior who goes toe-to-toe with Frieza.

Diminishing Returns and Black's Abuse

After the Namek Saga, Saiyan Power becomes less potent relative to the fighters' escalating strength. Gohan shows no visible improvement after being healed by Dende during his fight with Super Buu. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Future Trunks theorizes that Saiyans can only push this ability so far before hitting a ceiling, noting that Vegeta gained nothing useful from healing after his beating by Goku Black.

Ironically, Goku Black becomes the most terrifying user of Saiyan Power in the anime. Using Goku's stolen body, Black deliberately takes damage in fights, knowing each recovery will make him stronger. His ability to grow mid-battle is so extreme that a single beating from Super Saiyan Blue Goku lets base-form Black fight on par with Blue Vegeta moments later. His Saiyan Power even evolves his energy blade technique after recovering from another pummeling, allowing him to quickly turn the tables yet again.

Ultra Instinct later interacts with Saiyan Power in fascinating ways. During the Tournament of Power, Goku's growth under Ultra Instinct Sign is so rapid that the gods of Universe 11 are stunned. Each exchange with Jiren makes Goku stronger at an alarming rate, eventually triggering the complete Perfected Ultra Instinct transformation.
