Sumire Kakei

Sumire has purple eyes and, for much of her life, very long hair worked into a pair of braided tails, her side fringe clipped to about the jaw and the top fringe resting just over her eyes. Her everyday outfit reads almost like a school uniform: a black polo-neck under a violet dress with a white collar and a purple ribbon, worn with long dark sandals, and she favours viola flower ties. Undercover during her revenge scheme she hid behind a cracked, off-white mask with two horn-like nubs and a white cloak, a purple halter top and dark trousers beneath. Her look shifts with her over time, cut to a shoulder-length bob after graduation and grown back into long twin braids in the era three years on.

On the surface Sumire began as a shy, soft-spoken girl who idolised the Seventh Hokage and quietly looked out for her classmates, polite and eager to avoid conflict, telling herself she trained only to honour her father. That mask hid a hardened resolve. Set on carrying out his final wish, she showed little pity for the friends and villagers around her and once told Boruto that the Sumire he thought he knew had never been real. His refusal to give up on her let her release that hatred and answer for what she had done, and she came to treasure both the bonds she had made and Nue, which she regards as family. Sharp, methodical and quick to read how others fight, she grows calmer and more open once she joins the weapons team, even admitting feelings for Boruto that she is desperate to keep from him. Under pressure she stays composed and trusts her instincts, and by her later years she has shed the old class-rep reserve for a brighter, more forthright manner, settling into a friendly rivalry with Sarada over Boruto.

After Danzo Shimura's death exposed Root, its former members were shunned, and Sumire's family suffered for it. Her mother, Hakobe, grew ill and died, a loss so deep that Sumire eventually could no longer recall her voice. Her father, Tanuki Shigaraki, a Danzo loyalist, drilled her from childhood to avenge the organisation and passed to her the Gozu Tenno, through which she could summon the beast Nue. Orphaned, she buried her birth name of Sumire Shigaraki and built the cover of a meek class representative while she raised Nue and waited. When her scheme finally unfolded at the Academy, she loosed Nue on the village, but Boruto's stubborn faith in her, together with the recovered memory of her mother's love, let her cast off her father's plan. She turned herself in, was shown leniency, and was welcomed back to her class.

Well past ordinary genin level, Sumire fights best with Water Release and a cunning, inventive mind, and she keeps Nue as a summon even after the original contract is broken, a remnant seal living on in her left palm. Rather than chase the Chunin Exams she joins the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team, where she becomes one of its most valued researchers and assists Amado and Katasuke. She tends the volatile Kawaki, comes to understand his wounded temper through her own past, and later serves as Amado's assistant while quietly doubting his motives. When Ada's power rewrites the village's memories of Boruto, Sumire and Sarada prove immune, keeping the secret as a hidden edge. In the years that follow she stands among the few who accept Boruto as an ally, upgrading Sasuke's sword with technology her own future self was meant to invent, and helping hold the line against the Human God Trees.
