Janemba is a powerful demon born from the concentrated evil energy of all the souls in Hell. He serves as the main antagonist of Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, a reality-warping entity whose very existence distorts the boundaries between the living world and the afterlife.
Janemba's origin is rooted in a catastrophic failure at the Soul Cleansing Machine in King Yemma's domain. A young ogre attendant named Saike was tasked with operating the machine that processes and purifies the evil energy extracted from departed souls. When Saike neglected his duties, the accumulated negative energy overwhelmed the machine and enveloped him, transforming the hapless ogre into a massive, childlike yellow creature: the initial form of Janemba. Even in this immature state, Janemba's power was immense, and his mere existence caused reality to break down. The barrier between the living world and the afterlife collapsed, sending the dead flooding back to Earth and trapping King Yemma inside a crystalline barrier. Goku, who was competing in an Other World Tournament at the time, was the first to confront this bizarre new threat.
After Goku battered the initial form with a sustained assault, Janemba underwent a dramatic metamorphosis. He compressed into a smaller, sleeker body resembling a demonic knight, complete with a sword conjured from a discarded ogre club. This Super Janemba form was vastly more intelligent and dangerous than the childlike original. He demonstrated the ability to teleport by deconstructing and reassembling his body, create dimensional portals through which he could attack from impossible angles, and manipulate reality itself. His sword could cut through dimensions, and he could redirect energy attacks by opening portals in their path. Super Saiyan 3 Goku was overwhelmed by this form, unable to match Janemba's combination of raw power and spatial manipulation.
The threat posed by Super Janemba was so severe that it required the ultimate countermeasure: fusion. Goku and Vegeta, the latter of whom had been fighting the resurrected villains on Earth, reunited in the afterlife to perform the Fusion Dance. Their first attempt produced the failed fusion Veku, a comically overweight and helpless warrior who could barely defend himself against Janemba's attacks. After the thirty-minute fusion timer expired, they successfully fused on the second try, creating Gogeta. Super Saiyan Gogeta proved to be on an entirely different level from Janemba, casually dodging every attack and overwhelming the demon with a single technique: the Stardust Breaker, a small sphere of energy that purified the evil energy composing Janemba's body. The technique destroyed Janemba completely, restoring the Soul Cleansing Machine and freeing Saike from the evil energy's influence. Janemba's defeat restored the barrier between worlds and returned the dead to their proper place.
