The Officer Who Took a Stand

Staff Officer Black served as Commander Red's right hand throughout the Red Ribbon Army's campaign to collect the Dragon Balls. He coordinated military operations, managed the army's field officers, and dealt with the logistical challenges of pursuing seven magical orbs scattered across the globe. In virtually every way that mattered, Black was the person actually running the Red Ribbon Army, while Commander Red made the strategic decisions from his headquarters.

Black was a capable and pragmatic military officer who took his role seriously. He monitored Goku's progress with growing concern, recognized the boy as a genuine threat long before Red acknowledged it, and consistently advocated for more aggressive countermeasures. He respected the chain of command and served loyally even when he disagreed with Red's decisions, including the hiring of the expensive and unpredictable Mercenary Tao.

Everything changed when Black learned the truth about Commander Red's wish. After their army had suffered devastating losses, after soldiers had died by the hundreds fighting Goku and protecting the Dragon Balls, Red casually revealed that he intended to wish for increased height. Black's reaction was immediate and violent. He confronted Red with the weight of every sacrifice the army had made, then shot his commander dead on the spot. It was a moment of genuine moral clarity from an otherwise antagonistic character.

Taking command of what remained of the Red Ribbon Army, Black donned a giant battle mech and fought Goku directly. Despite the mechanical advantages, the young Saiyan proved too powerful and too agile for the machine, and Black was killed when Goku destroyed the mech. His death effectively ended the Red Ribbon Army as a military force, though its scientific division under Dr. Gero would continue to produce threats for decades to come. Black remains one of the more nuanced minor villains in early Dragon Ball, a man whose loyalty had limits and whose sense of justice, while twisted, was still present.
