Goku's tail regrows as he trains across the wilderness. He encounters Master Chin, a sick martial artist bullied by the ruthless Sky Dragon, and volunteers to fight in a high-stakes match for the title of Master of Martial Arts.
Goku pushes his training to brutal extremes: hauling boulders ten times his size, walking steep mountains on his hands through rain and scorching heat. His tail regrows, stronger than before, during this intense period. When his training takes him near a city, Goku seeks out competition and learns of Master Chin, a respected martial artist from the Chin-Star School.
Goku arrives to find Chin defending himself and his son Shoken against Rising Dragon, a thug backed by goons who has accused Shoken of stealing his wallet. Chin performs his signature Phantom-Star technique, projecting illusory images of himself, but a coughing fit from his illness leaves him vulnerable to a beating. Sky Dragon, Rising Dragon's brother and the leader of the rival Panther-Fang School, arrives, slaps his brother for the misconduct, and apologizes.
Goku asks Chin for a training session, but the master's condition worsens before they can properly spar. Chin explains his dilemma: too sick to fight for the title of Master of Martial Arts, his school has been gutted by Sky Dragon's intimidation tactics. Goku volunteers to fight in Chin's place. Though Shoken is bitter about being passed over, Goku proves his worth by absorbing Sky Dragon's devastating Panther-Cyclone and answering with Chin's own Phantom-Star technique, a dazzling barrage of fifty strikes delivered simultaneously. Sky Dragon falls with a single knockout punch, and Chin's school is restored.
The climactic fight between Goku and Sky Dragon is a showcase of contrasting styles. Sky Dragon's Panther-Cyclone is a spinning, devastating offense that targets every possible position. Goku's answer, the Phantom-Star technique he learned from Chin, counters by creating so many simultaneous attack images that even Sky Dragon's whirlwind cannot find the real one.
Shoken's sabotage attempt, slipping a sleeping tablet into Goku's soup, adds a layer of tension and character drama. His desperation to prove himself to his father and his resentment toward the outsider chosen over him make him sympathetic even as he acts dishonorably. The guilt on his face as Goku fights through stomach pain is a small but effective emotional beat.
Goku's tail regrowing during his training is a significant physical development. The tail returns stronger than ever, and Goku's comment that it will never break again foreshadows its increased durability in future encounters.
The Phantom-Star technique, which projects illusory images through energy manipulation, is similar to the Afterimage Technique but represents a distinct school of martial arts. Goku's ability to learn it quickly demonstrates his gift for absorbing fighting techniques on the fly.
