The Little Monster

Across the world, the Z Fighters prepare for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. Piccolo meditates on the Lookout. Android 18 makes Krillin spar for breakfast at Kame House. Vegeta and Trunks push themselves in the Gravity Chamber. At the Son household, Gohan finishes breakfast and heads outside to train, with Chi-Chi warning Goten not to interfere.

Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and begins his exercises, but Goten keeps interrupting by chasing dinosaurs. After nearly being crushed by one, Gohan scolds his brother and invites him to help by throwing rocks instead. Goten hurls stones for a while, then casually announces he wants to become a Super Saiyan too. Gohan laughs and starts explaining how years of training are required, only to watch in stunned silence as Goten powers up and transforms on the spot.

Gohan demands to know when this first happened. Goten cannot remember. A flashback reveals the painful truth: during a sparring session with Chi-Chi, Goten accidentally transformed. His mother broke down in tears and called him a "monster." Goten recounts this quietly, and Gohan reassures him by calling him "a good little monster." Impressed by his brother's potential, Gohan starts sparring with Goten properly. The young Saiyan demonstrates a polished fighting style that pushes Gohan back. When Gohan takes to the air, Goten protests that he cannot fly. Gohan promises to teach him. Then Videl's helicopter appears on the horizon, and the episode closes with Chi-Chi and Videl bickering at the door.

Born With Lightning in His Blood

Goten achieves what took his father decades and his brother years of trauma: a Super Saiyan transformation without any apparent emotional catalyst. He simply does it because he wants to. This reframes the transformation entirely. For Goku, it required the death of his best friend. For Gohan, it took Cell murdering Android 16 in front of him. For Goten, it happened during a sparring match with his mom. The progression suggests that each generation of half-Saiyans accesses the form more easily, as though the genetic threshold keeps lowering. Chi-Chi's reaction to Goten's first transformation is heartbreaking because it echoes her deepest fear. She has spent Goten's entire life trying to keep him from becoming a warrior, and the universe has made it impossible.

Training Montage Across Two Worlds

The episode opens with a montage showing every major fighter preparing simultaneously, a technique Dragon Ball Z uses sparingly but effectively. Piccolo's meditation on the Lookout, where Dende heals butterflies singed by Piccolo's energy, is an anime-only detail that quietly illustrates the intensity of his training. The brief cut to Other World shows Goku training under Grand Kai while Fortuneteller Baba receives a scolding for allowing Goku's day trip without proper authorization.

The manga chapter this episode adapts focuses more tightly on Gohan and Goten, with the broader montage elements added by the anime staff. Chi-Chi's sparring flashback with Goten is also anime-original, expanding on a single manga panel that merely states Goten can transform.
