Cell triggers his self-destruct sequence to destroy Earth, and Goku sacrifices himself by teleporting Cell to King Kai's planet. But Cell survives the explosion, returns stronger than ever, kills Future Trunks, and injures Gohan, leaving the Z Fighters with no options remaining.
Cell, reverted to his Semi-Perfect form and facing certain destruction at Gohan's hands, makes a choice born of pure spite. If he cannot win, he will take everyone with him. His body begins to expand as he triggers a self-destruct sequence powerful enough to obliterate the entire planet. There is no way to stop it, no technique that can defuse the biological bomb he has become. Earth has seconds left.
Goku understands what needs to happen immediately. He places his hand on Cell's swelling body and turns to Gohan for the last time. The farewell is brief. He tells his son that he fought well, to take care of his mother, and to keep up with his studies. Then he uses Instant Transmission to teleport both himself and Cell away from Earth, choosing King Kai's small planet in Other World as the only safe destination he can visualize in time.
The explosion destroys King Kai's planet entirely, killing Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory in the blast. On Earth, the Z Fighters are left standing in stunned silence. Gohan collapses under the weight of what just happened: his father gave his life to correct the mistake Gohan made by not finishing Cell when he had the chance.
The grief barely has time to settle before disaster strikes again. Cell's nucleus, a single microscopic cluster of cells containing the blueprint for his entire body, survived the explosion. Thanks to his Saiyan genetics, the near-death experience triggers a massive power increase. Cell regenerates not just intact, but in his Perfect form and significantly stronger than before. He uses Goku's own Instant Transmission, learned from witnessing the technique, to teleport back to Earth.
His first act upon returning is to fire a beam directly through Future Trunks' chest, killing him instantly. Vegeta, watching his son die before his eyes, erupts in a rage and launches a desperate assault on Cell. But the power gap is now wider than ever. Cell swats Vegeta aside and prepares to finish him, only for Gohan to throw himself in the path of the blast. The attack cripples Gohan's left arm, leaving the young Super Saiyan 2 severely diminished.
With Goku dead, Trunks dead, Gohan injured, and Cell more powerful than ever, the situation has reached its absolute lowest point. Cell begins charging a Solar Kamehameha, declaring it powerful enough to destroy not just the Earth but the entire solar system. There is no backup plan, no hidden trump card, no reinforcements coming.
The episode's emotional weight is immense. Goku's sacrifice, Trunks' sudden death, Vegeta's futile rage, and Gohan's crippling injury all pile onto each other in rapid succession. Everything that has gone wrong can be traced back to a single moment of hesitation, Gohan's refusal to end Cell when victory was his.
