In the aftermath of Goku's death, Piccolo claims Gohan for training, Goku begins his journey along the million-kilometer Snake Way in Other World, and the surviving Z Fighters brace for two Saiyans arriving in one year.
With Raditz defeated and Goku dead, the survivors must prepare for an even greater threat. Bulma recovers Raditz's scouter and repairs it, planning to use the technology to locate the scattered Z Fighters. Piccolo shocks everyone by claiming Gohan, explaining that the boy's hidden power makes him essential for the coming battle. Krillin and the others protest, but Piccolo takes the unconscious child before anyone can stop him.
In Other World, Kami escorts Goku before the towering King Yemma, judge of the afterlife. Rather than being revived immediately, Goku requests permission to train under King Kai, a being whose strength surpasses even Yemma's. The King grants passage to Snake Way, a winding path stretching one million kilometers between Yemma's palace and King Kai's realm. A guide warns Goku that falling off the path means no return. Before departing, Goku asks Fortuneteller Baba to tell his friends not to revive him for one full year, buying time to complete his training.
Piccolo takes Gohan to a barren wasteland and tests his dormant power by hurling him at a mountain, which the terrified boy accidentally destroys on impact. Satisfied with the result, Piccolo declares that he will forge Gohan into a warrior whether the child wants it or not.
The episode splits the story into three parallel tracks that will run for the next several months of narrative time. Goku's afterlife journey, Gohan's wilderness survival, and the Z Fighters' preparation each carry their own tension and stakes.
Piccolo taking custody of Gohan is one of the series' most important character decisions. The Demon King's son, who once sought to conquer Earth, now takes responsibility for a child's growth and survival. His insistence that Goku is "too soft" to properly train his own son adds a layer of harsh pragmatism that Gohan desperately needs.
With one year until Vegeta and Nappa arrive, every character is forced onto a new path. Goku must traverse an impossibly long road in the afterlife, Gohan must survive under the most ruthless teacher imaginable, and the remaining fighters must find strength they never knew they needed. The clock is ticking, and no one can afford to waste a single day.
