The Androids Appear

Three years have passed since the mysterious stranger vanished into his time machine. Goku, Piccolo, and Gohan depart from Mount Paozu at dawn, Piccolo noting quietly that he wishes they had been given more time to grow stronger. Along the way they meet Krillin, and the group descends on the coastal city of Sasebo on Amenbo Island, the exact location Trunks specified. Tien and Yamcha are already waiting. Notably absent are Vegeta and Chiaotzu; Tien left Chiaotzu behind at Kame House, judging the battle too dangerous for him.

The biggest surprise is Bulma, who has brought baby Trunks along to see the Androids. Goku urges her to leave for safety, but she insists on staying a little longer. When Krillin asks about the baby and Gohan assumes the child is Yamcha's, an amused Goku blurts out the baby's name and father, shocking everyone and forcing him to laugh it off as a lucky guess. Yajirobe arrives with a bag of Senzu Beans courtesy of Korin, declines to stick around for the fight, and departs in his hovercar. Moments later, a blast from the sky shoots his vehicle down, the first sign that the Androids have arrived.

The Z Fighters scatter into the city to search for enemies they have never seen and cannot sense through ki detection. Android 19 and Android 20 prowl the streets in disguise, their Red Ribbon Army insignia hidden beneath hats. When a motorist yells at Android 20 for blocking the road, the machine rips the engine from the vehicle and lifts the man through the roof. Yamcha stumbles upon the pair and recognizes the Red Ribbon logo on their caps. Before he can raise an alarm, Android 20 seizes him by the face, draining his life force. A nearby truck crashes into a gas station, triggering a massive explosion. As the city burns, Android 20 drives his other hand straight through Yamcha's chest, leaving the warrior barely alive.

After eight episodes of preparation, the episode makes good on its promise with brutal efficiency. The threat Trunks described as a distant nightmare is now flesh and steel on the streets of a populated city. The decision to have Yamcha be the first casualty is thematically pointed. He is the original martial artist of the group, the first human ally Goku ever made, and his near-death here serves as an immediate reality check. If the Androids can do this to a seasoned Z Fighter in seconds, the stakes for Goku are genuinely terrifying.

The undetectable ki issue also raises the tension considerably. For the first time in Dragon Ball Z, the heroes cannot locate their enemies through their most reliable tool. They must search a crowded city block by block, a task that strips away the godlike advantage ki sensing normally provides and grounds the conflict in something almost like a thriller.

This episode debuts updated outfits for nearly the entire cast. Goku's gi loses its kanji markings, his belt becomes a sash, and his boots adopt a new color scheme that will persist for the remainder of Dragon Ball Z. Gohan switches to black shoes with white shin guards, Krillin gains a blue undershirt, Yamcha adds King Kai's symbol, and Tien trades his shirt for a green sash. These visual refreshes signal a new era for the series.

A small production detail: when Goku tosses the Senzu Beans to Bulma before heading into the city, it was a scene added by the anime to fix a manga continuity error where the beans mysteriously teleported from Goku's possession to Bulma's between panels. Toei's attention to that gap is a rare case of the adaptation improving upon the source material.
