Trunks Ascends

Vegeta stands frozen in disbelief as his attacks fail to faze Perfect Cell. After being kicked through multiple rock formations and plunging into the ocean below, the Saiyan prince drags himself out of the water, battered but far from broken. What follows is one of the most iconic moments in Dragon Ball Z history. Vegeta spreads his arms wide and begins gathering an enormous concentration of energy. The island itself starts to crumble. Storm clouds split apart overhead. Massive bolts of electricity tear at the ground near Cell and Android 16.

Cell stands firm, smirking. Android 16, however, takes a cautious step backward, and Vegeta notices. Even Future Trunks screams at his father to stop, fearing the blast could destroy the planet itself. Then Vegeta lets it fly. The golden wave of the Final Flash slams into Cell with enough force to carve a path straight through the atmosphere and vanish into deep space. When the light fades, Cell is missing his arm and most of one side of his torso.

For a brief, glorious moment, Vegeta savors his apparent victory. Then Cell reminds him of a critical detail: he carries Piccolo's Namekian cells. In seconds, his entire body regenerates completely. Vegeta panics and unleashes a frantic barrage of energy blasts, but they do nothing. Cell closes the distance with a single punch to Vegeta's face, then kicks him skyward and drives an elbow into his back, smashing him into the earth. The Saiyan prince collapses out of his powered-up state, unconscious and defeated. Watching from the sidelines, Future Trunks' rage reaches a breaking point so intense that his irises vanish and his energy accidentally jolts Krillin. Cell stares in shock at a power level that clearly eclipses Vegeta's.

The Final Flash sequence encapsulates everything that makes Vegeta such a compelling character. His most powerful technique, born from pure determination and Saiyan pride, actually works. It genuinely damages Cell in a way nothing else has. For one shining moment, Vegeta proves that his relentless pursuit of strength was not in vain.

And then it does not matter. Cell's regeneration erases Vegeta's greatest achievement in seconds. The cruelty of this reversal is what elevates the scene beyond a simple fight. Vegeta did everything right. He pushed his body to its absolute limit and delivered a perfect attack. He still lost, not because he was weak, but because the enemy was designed to survive anything. It is the kind of loss that breaks something fundamental inside a warrior, and the aftermath shows exactly that.

Episode 162 introduces both the Final Flash and Super Saiyan Third Grade to the anime, making it one of the most technically significant installments of the saga. The Final Flash beam is depicted much larger in the anime than in the manga, where it was narrower and created a proportionally sized hole through Cell's body. The anime's expanded version of the attack gives it the dramatic weight it deserves.

Takao Koyama, the creator of Broly, has cited Trunks' transformation sequence at the end of this episode as the direct basis for both Broly's design and the Legendary Super Saiyan concept. The comedy interlude of Gohan accidentally setting Goku's hair on fire while trying to cook a steak is anime-exclusive and provides welcome levity between the episode's devastating combat sequences.
