Plans Collide and Crumble

Goku teleports to Earth and immediately throws one Potara earring to Gohan, intending to fuse with his son and create a warrior powerful enough to defeat Buu. But his throw is off target, and the earring disappears into the rubble below. With Gohan scrambling to find it, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3 to hold Buu at bay.

A sudden shift occurs inside Buu's body. The Fusion Dance timer expires, splitting Gotenks back into Goten and Trunks. Buu loses over a third of his absorbed power instantly, and his appearance changes to reflect the diminished state. Goku, sensing the dramatic drop in Buu's strength, declares he can now win without fusion. But Buu has already noticed the severed piece of his head from Goku's earlier Destructo Disc attack. Before Goku can capitalize, the detached flesh engulfs Gohan and absorbs him.

Now more powerful than ever, Buu taunts Goku while offering him time to find a fusion partner. Goku considers Dende and Mr. Satan but rejects both. Then he senses Vegeta's energy, back on Earth courtesy of King Yemma. Goku teleports to Vegeta and pleads with him to fuse, but Vegeta is furious. He knows Goku hid his Super Saiyan 3 power during their earlier fight. Only after learning that Bulma, Trunks, and everyone else are either dead or absorbed does Vegeta relent. He puts on the earring, and the two Saiyans are pulled together into a single being: Vegito.

Pride Meets Desperation

Vegeta's reluctance to fuse is entirely consistent with his character. Permanent fusion means permanent surrender of his individual identity, the very thing that defines him. He has spent his entire life proving himself as Vegeta, the Saiyan Prince. Merging with Goku would erase that identity forever. It takes the knowledge that his wife and son are gone to break through that pride.

Goku's deliberate omission of the permanent nature of fusion until after Vegeta puts on the earring is a rare moment of deception from him. He knows that full disclosure would have meant Vegeta refusing, and with everyone's lives at stake, Goku cannot afford that outcome.

The Birth of Vegito

Vegito's creation is the culmination of every failed strategy that came before. The Fusion Dance produced a powerful but undisciplined child. Individual fighters, no matter how strong, kept being absorbed or overpowered. The Potara fusion takes the two most experienced Saiyan warriors alive and combines them into something that should be categorically superior to anything Buu has become.

The emotional weight of this moment extends beyond the battle. Goku and Vegeta, eternal rivals who have defined each other's journeys, are now one person. Every conflict, every grudge, every moment of respect between them is fused into a single consciousness.
