Nail is the sole warrior-type Namekian on Planet Namek and the personal bodyguard of Grand Elder Guru. The strongest Namekian of his era, he fought Frieza alone to buy time for the others, and his eventual fusion with Piccolo became a turning point in Namekian combat history.
Nail served as the protector of Grand Elder Guru, the patriarch from whom all living Namekians on the planet were born. As the only warrior-type Namekian among Guru's children, Nail carried the full burden of defending his people against external threats. With a power level of 42,000, he was by far the strongest Namekian alive, though this still placed him well below the Frieza Force elites who invaded his world. When Frieza himself came to Guru's home seeking the password to activate the Dragon Balls, Nail challenged the tyrant to single combat, fully aware that he could not win. His goal was never victory; it was to stall Frieza long enough for Dende to deliver the Dragon Ball password to Krillin and Gohan.
Nail's battle against Frieza was one of the most selfless acts in the Namek saga. He endured a prolonged beating at the hands of the tyrant, who toyed with him rather than finishing the fight quickly, buying precious minutes for his allies. Left mortally wounded and dying on the Namekian plains, Nail was discovered by Piccolo, who had recently arrived on the planet after being revived by the Dragon Balls. Nail offered to fuse with Piccolo, a technique unique to Namekians that would combine their power and consciousness. Piccolo accepted, and the fusion dramatically increased his combat abilities, elevating him to a level where he could credibly challenge Frieza's second form. Nail's consciousness persisted within Piccolo after the fusion, occasionally speaking to him as an inner voice. This marked the first instance of Namekian fusion in the series and established a precedent that Piccolo would later replicate by fusing with Kami, the other half of his original self.
