Old Friends, New Enemies

Goku swims across the ocean toward Papaya Island, asking passing boats for directions along the way. Meanwhile, his friends are flying in on a plane. Yamcha is eager to show the results of three years of training, Krillin insists he should not be underestimated, and Launch is fighting the urge to hijack the aircraft. Master Roshi urgently needs the bathroom, creating a scene that embarrasses everyone.

After arriving at the island, Goku climbs a tree for fruit and is attacked by tigers who tear up his clothes, the same black outfit he took from Shu three years earlier. At the airport, the group waits impatiently for Roshi. Krillin and Yamcha register while Roshi quietly asks the registration clerk to sign in "Jackie Chun," secretly entering the tournament once again. As the deadline approaches, Oolong worries Goku will miss the cutoff entirely.

Then Master Shen, the Crane Hermit, arrives with his two disciples: Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu. The tension between Shen and Roshi is immediate and personal. Shen mocks Roshi's students and promises his own will demonstrate "real martial arts." The two old rivals exchange barbs before Shen walks away. With only a minute left before registration closes, Goku comes sprinting in wearing a tiger pelt, having swum from the other side of the world. Roshi signs him up just in time. Over dinner and a night at a hotel, the group reconnects. The next morning, Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha don their orange Turtle School gis, and the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament officially begins with 182 participants.

The Crane Hermit's Challenge

The confrontation between Master Roshi and Master Shen crackles with decades of rivalry. Their exchange is not mere trash talk; it is the collision of two martial arts philosophies, the Turtle School and the Crane School, that has been simmering since long before the series began. Shen's arrogance and Roshi's measured responses establish the stakes for the entire tournament.

Goku's arrival in a tiger pelt, having swum from Yahhoy on the other side of the globe, is both hilarious and awe-inspiring. The casual revelation that he swam that distance stuns his friends and silently communicates three years of growth more effectively than any training montage could.

Roshi secretly entering as Jackie Chun again adds intrigue. His private thoughts reveal he has been training in secret for three years as well, determined not to lose to his own student. The master is not ready to be surpassed, and that tension will fuel the entire tournament.

Tournament Eve

This episode marks the official beginning of the Tien Shinhan Saga and introduces Master Shen as a named, present antagonist for the first time. His disciples, Tien and Chiaotzu, whom Goku encountered as con artists during his training journey, now stand as legitimate martial arts rivals.

The tournament format has changed: it will now be held every three years instead of five, and this iteration features 182 participants. The increased frequency and larger field reflect the growing popularity of martial arts competition in the Dragon Ball world.
