Jackie Chun and Tien Shinhan collide in Match 5, an explosive semifinal between the former champion and the Crane School's prodigy. After Tien sees through Jackie's Afterimage Technique with his third eye, the two warriors push each other to exhaustion.
The semifinal between Jackie Chun and Tien Shinhan begins after the Crane School tests Jackie's awareness by having Chiaotzu telekinetically fire a toy gun cork at his head. Jackie dodges it purely by accident while leaning in to ogle a salesgirl, leaving Shen uncertain whether the old fighter detected their scheme.
Once in the ring, the two fighters prove remarkably evenly matched. Jackie throws Tien completely out of the arena, but Tien reveals his ability to fly, floating back to the ring and dismissing the attempt. Both fighters take to the air for a spectacular sequence of punches that leaves the crowd stunned.
Jackie escalates by deploying the Afterimage Technique, creating eight copies of himself that circle Tien at high speed. The copies close in with punches and kicks from every angle, but Tien uses his third eye to identify the real Jackie and delivers a decisive kick that sends him into a wall. Jackie removes his coat, powers up, and the battle intensifies. After exchanging rush techniques, chokeholds, and cartwheels, both fighters end up on opposite sides of the arena, completely spent.
The Afterimage Technique's failure against Tien's third eye is a pivotal moment. Jackie's signature move, which served him well in the previous tournament, meets its perfect counter in an opponent who can literally see more than anyone else. The visual of eight Jackies spiraling around a confused Tien before he calmly identifies the real one is one of the saga's most memorable images.
The fight's pacing is excellent, building from cautious probing to all-out warfare. Jackie Chun's decision to remove his coat and power up signals genuine respect for his opponent, something he did not need to do in any previous match. Their mutual exhaustion at the episode's end makes it clear that whoever wins will earn it.
This match establishes that Tien's third eye provides more than cosmetic distinction. It grants him enhanced perception that can neutralize illusion-based techniques, a capability that forces his opponents to rely on raw power and strategy rather than tricks.
Jackie Chun's recognition that Tien is among the most gifted fighters he has ever faced carries enormous weight coming from Master Roshi in disguise. The fight foreshadows the philosophical confrontation to come, as Jackie begins hinting that Tien's talent is being wasted under Shen's destructive teachings.
