Counting Controversy!!

EpisodeEp. 91

Krillin fires his first Kamehameha and turns the tide against Chiaotzu. By exploiting Chiaotzu's inability to count without his hands, Krillin breaks free of his paralyzing technique and punches him out of the ring. That night, Master Shen attempts to assassinate Goku.

Brains Over Telekinesis

Krillin gambles on a Kamehameha and it pays off. He dodges Chiaotzu's Dodon Ray, uses the resulting smokescreen as cover, appears behind his opponent, and fires the blast at point-blank range. Chiaotzu spirals backward but saves himself with his flight ability just before hitting the ground.

The fight becomes a physical brawl. Chiaotzu unveils his Drill Attack, spinning his body like a corkscrew and ramming Krillin headfirst. After taking several hits, Krillin tries the technique himself with poor results. Then Chiaotzu deploys his most dangerous ability: a paralysis technique that makes Krillin feel as though his stomach is on fire, leaving him writhing on the ground while Chiaotzu beats him senseless.

Krillin's breakthrough comes through pure cleverness. He shouts math problems at Chiaotzu, who cannot count without using his fingers. The moment Chiaotzu raises his hands to count, the paralysis breaks, and Krillin lands a clean punch that sends him flying out of the ring. That night, Master Shen sneaks into Goku's room to assassinate him in his sleep, but Goku's instincts wake him. Tien intervenes, promising Shen that he will kill Goku himself during the tournament finals.

Counting on Victory

The math strategy is brilliantly simple. Chiaotzu's paralysis technique requires both hands to maintain, and his inability to do arithmetic without his fingers is a comedic weakness with life-or-death consequences. Krillin figures this out mid-beating, turning the crowd's laughter into a genuine tactical victory.

Krillin's first successful Kamehameha is a milestone, proving he has truly internalized Master Roshi's teachings. The nighttime assassination attempt adds a sinister dimension to the saga, revealing that Shen is willing to bypass the tournament entirely to get revenge for Mercenary Tao's death.

A Student Surpasses His Limits

Krillin's first Kamehameha marks his growth from comic relief to legitimate fighter. His victory through intelligence rather than brute force becomes a defining trait for the character throughout the series.

Tien's decision to stop Shen's assassination attempt is the first clear sign that he has a conscience, something Master Roshi will later use to reach him. His promise to kill Goku publicly, in front of Roshi, shows that Tien still walks the Crane School's path, but his willingness to insist on a fair fight hints at the internal conflict building within him.
