Death Rays from Above

Match 3 begins with a problem Krillin did not anticipate. After a brief physical exchange, Chiaotzu levitates above the ring and stays there, completely out of reach. From his aerial position, Chiaotzu begins firing Dodon Rays, the signature beam technique of the Crane School, forcing Krillin into a desperate sprint around the ring to avoid being hit.

Goku recognizes the Dodon Ray immediately. It is the same attack Mercenary Tao used against him. When he mentions this aloud, Tien Shinhan overhears and demands to know how Goku is familiar with the technique. Goku casually explains that Tao used it right before Goku killed him. Tien is stunned, as Tao was one of the strongest fighters he had ever known.

Jackie Chun reveals to Goku that Mercenary Tao was Master Shen's brother. When Tien relays this information to Shen, the Crane Hermit's hostility toward the Turtle School intensifies into something far more personal. Meanwhile, Krillin struggles against Chiaotzu's aerial bombardment but refuses to give up. He decides to attempt a Kamehameha, even though Jackie Chun warns he is not ready to use it.

The Tao Connection

The revelation about Mercenary Tao transforms the tournament's stakes. What began as a rivalry between martial arts schools becomes deeply personal for Master Shen, who now has a blood vendetta against Goku. Tien's shock at learning Tao is dead is one of his most revealing moments, as the assassin was someone he genuinely respected.

Krillin's determination against Chiaotzu is admirable even in a losing position. He tries everything to reach his airborne opponent, including using the arena walls as launchpads, but Chiaotzu's ability to fly gives him an insurmountable positional advantage. The decision to attempt a Kamehameha despite Jackie Chun's warning shows Krillin's willingness to gamble when cornered.

Shadows of the Assassin

The Dodon Ray's reappearance links this saga directly to the Red Ribbon Army arc and Goku's battle against Mercenary Tao. Learning that Tao was Shen's brother recontextualizes the entire Crane School's hostility from professional rivalry to family vengeance.

This is the first time Krillin attempts the Kamehameha in battle, a milestone for the character. Chiaotzu's fighting style, combining flight with ranged energy attacks, introduces a combat dynamic the Turtle School has never encountered, forcing them to develop new strategies on the fly.
