The World Martial Arts Tournament bracket is drawn, and Goku spots the fighter he has been waiting for: a timid boy named Uub from a remote island. Goku reveals that Uub is the reincarnation of Kid Buu, reborn as an innocent child carrying immense dormant power. Pan demolishes her opponent, and Goku begins provoking Uub to unleash his hidden strength.
The twelve tournament fighters gather to draw their matchups. Pan's opponent, a hulking man calling himself Wild Tiger, laughs at the little girl he has been paired with. Trunks endures unwanted attention from the flamboyant Otokosuki. Vegeta, matched against an arrogant fighter named Nok, resolves the situation before the tournament even begins by knocking him unconscious with a casual backhand and informing the officials that Nok has decided to forfeit.
Goku asks Good Buu to use his magic to manipulate the bracket, ensuring that Goku faces a specific opponent in the first round. That opponent is Uub, a skinny, terrified boy who entered the tournament solely to win prize money and feed his impoverished village.
Goku shares the truth with Vegeta. Just before the Spirit Bomb destroyed Kid Buu ten years ago, Goku wished aloud for Buu to be reborn as a good person so they could fight again someday. He believes King Yemma honored that request. The proof is in the name: Uub is Buu spelled backward, and the boy carries within him the same enormous power that once threatened the universe.
Piccolo and Dende, overhearing with their heightened senses, react with shock. But Goku is not worried. Uub is an innocent child with no knowledge of his origins, just a boy with extraordinary potential and no idea how to use it. The first round begins, and Pan quickly proves her Saiyan heritage by launching Wild Tiger clean out of the ring with a single blow.
Goku and Uub face each other in the ring. Piccolo and Dende exchange knowing glances, understanding that this matchup is the true championship bout regardless of what comes later. Uub, trembling with nerves, can barely stand in front of the legendary martial artist.
Goku realizes that the boy's power is locked behind layers of fear and inexperience. To bring it out, he resorts to provocation, hurling insults at Uub's parents and family. The taunts are cruel and deliberate. Goku kicks the frightened boy toward the edge of the ring, but the strategy works. Something dark and ancient stirs behind Uub's eyes, and with a sudden burst of rage, the reincarnation of Kid Buu lunges at Goku with startling force.
