The Legend of Goku

EpisodeEp. 13

Rampage, Reunion, and Roads Diverge

Great Ape Goku tears through Pilaf's castle with unstoppable fury. Pilaf, Shu, and Mai wake to the sound of their fortress being shredded and attempt to fight back by throwing bedroom objects at the beast, then fleeing to a plane. Their missiles and even a heat-seeking warhead only stagger the Ape momentarily. When Pilaf foolishly stomps on the unconscious creature's tail, Goku revives and hurls an entire tower at their aircraft, sending it crashing down.

Yamcha, carrying the injured Bulma, tries to escape the destruction, but the Great Ape picks Bulma up and begins licking her. Puar recalls Goku's weakness: his tail. Yamcha crafts a makeshift stone sword and strikes, but the blade shatters against the thick appendage. Plan B succeeds when Yamcha and Oolong grab hold of the tail while Puar transforms into scissors and cuts it clean off. Goku shrinks back to his normal, naked, unconscious human form. Bulma is dropped safely. Pilaf orders his minions to shoot the group, then immediately runs the other way. Shu and Mai follow their boss in retreat.

The next morning, Goku wakes with no memory of his transformation. His friends silently agree not to tell him that he is almost certainly the "monster" that killed Grandpa Gohan. Wearing Oolong's oversized pants, Goku retrieves his Power Pole from the rubble. Bulma, unable to wish for a boyfriend, and Yamcha, still afraid of women, look at each other and decide to become a couple on the spot. Bulma gives Goku her Dragon Radar so he can find his grandfather's four-star ball when the Dragon Balls reactivate in a year. The group parts ways: Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar head to West City, while Goku climbs onto the Flying Nimbus and sets off toward Kame House to train under Master Roshi.

Scissors Beat the Ape

The Great Ape rampage delivers the saga's most intense action sequence. Pilaf's castle is reduced to rubble, and the sheer helplessness of the heroes against their own friend creates real tension. Yamcha's stone sword shattering against Goku's tail is a strong visual beat, and the actual solution, Puar becoming scissors, is the kind of simple creative problem-solving that makes Dragon Ball fights special.

The morning after carries surprising emotional weight. The group's collective decision to keep the truth about Grandpa Gohan's death from Goku is bittersweet. Bulma and Yamcha's spontaneous decision to date is charmingly logical: neither got their wish, so they settle for each other. Goku waving goodbye from the Nimbus as the instrumental theme plays is one of the saga's most heartfelt moments.

End of an Era, Start of Training

The Emperor Pilaf Saga concludes here, marking the end of the original Dragon Ball quest. Goku's decision to seek training with Master Roshi pivots the series from treasure hunting to martial arts, the format that will define everything going forward. The Bulma-Yamcha relationship begins, destined to persist through Dragon Ball Z before its eventual collapse. Goku's lost tail will grow back, ensuring the Great Ape threat lingers. The Dragon Radar changes hands from Bulma to Goku, symbolizing his transition from sidekick on Bulma's quest to the protagonist of his own story.
