He's Here

EpisodeEp. 149

Piccolo and Android 17 push each other to the limit in an explosive clash across the islands, only for the real threat to arrive. Cell appears on the battlefield, drawn by the energy signatures, ready to absorb the androids and achieve his long-awaited perfect form.

The Calm Before the Monster

The battle between Piccolo and Android 17 intensifies as both fighters start landing serious blows. Android 17 cannot understand how Piccolo became so powerful, unaware that the Namekian fused with Kami to reconstitute the original Nameless Namekian. The two seem almost perfectly matched, with neither gaining a clear sustained advantage. Androids 16 and 18 observe from the sidelines, both regarding the fight as somewhat pointless.

At Kame House, Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha sense something ominous heading toward the combat zone. On the Lookout, Goku and Gohan wait anxiously for Vegeta and Future Trunks to emerge from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, debating whether Piccolo actually has a shot at winning. Over at Capsule Corporation, Bulma finally cracks the android deactivation problem and completes the shutdown remote, wasting no time as she heads for Kame House to deliver it.

The two combatants relocate to a bigger island to finish their fight without restraint, tearing apart the landscape with every exchange. Craters litter the earth as they slam each other through cliffs and rocky outcroppings. During a brief pause, Piccolo goads 17 about being an older model, which infuriates the android into boasting that nothing surpasses him. Then Piccolo's expression shifts from confidence to terror as he senses something approaching.

Standing atop a nearby cliff, Cell surveys the scene below with predatory satisfaction. He had tracked Piccolo's energy output and correctly guessed that only a fight with the androids would explain it. With cold gratitude, Cell thanks Piccolo for gathering his targets in one place. Androids 17 and 18 glance at the newcomer with complete disinterest, utterly underestimating the creature who is, in truth, more powerful than either of them.

Arrogance as a Weapon

Android 17's hubris is the defining thread of this episode. His declaration that nothing is more powerful than him would be merely boastful if the stakes were not so high. Paired with 18's bored dismissal of Cell, the androids' collective arrogance sets up the tragedy that follows. They simply cannot conceive of a threat they cannot handle, and that blindness will cost 17 dearly.

Piccolo's transformation from confident fighter to a man gripped by genuine fear when Cell arrives is striking. For the first time in this arc, the reunified Namekian realizes his strength might not be enough. The episode handles this tonal shift masterfully, transitioning from an evenly matched martial arts showcase to the arrival of something far more dangerous.

Bulma completing the shutdown remote adds a ticking clock to the narrative. The audience now knows a solution exists, but whether it can reach the battlefield in time is another matter entirely.

Setting the Stage

The anime takes notable liberties with this stretch of the story, adding sequences like Piccolo and 17 fighting underwater and causing a volcanic eruption through their clash. These additions serve to amplify the scale of their confrontation beyond what the manga depicted, making Cell's eventual superiority feel even more dramatic by comparison.

The edited TV broadcast inserted additional dialogue during the silent staredown between Piccolo and 17, including a surprisingly warm exchange where 17 admits he is starting to like Piccolo. This added characterization gives their rivalry a layer of mutual respect that makes the upcoming events hit harder. In the original Japanese version, the silence speaks for itself, letting the tension build without words.
