Vegeta discovers that Whis is Beerus's martial arts teacher and resolves to win him over with food. After every restaurant fails, a humble cup of instant ramen secures Vegeta's ticket to Beerus's planet.
On the Sacred World of the Kai, Old Kai and Kibito Kai notice planets vanishing across the cosmos without explanation. Back on Earth, the mood is far more mundane. Goku is plowing fields on his tractor when Krillin drops by, curious to feel just how strong his old training partner has become. He asks Goku to hit him. After some hesitation, Goku obliges, launching Krillin across the countryside and into a boulder. Android 18 is not amused.
Meanwhile, Bulma has been wining and dining Whis at various upscale restaurants, hoping to keep the angel on friendly terms in case Beerus threatens Earth again. Vegeta returns home to Capsule Corporation and encounters Whis for the first time since the battle. When he senses an unfamiliar, overwhelming power from the angel, Whis reveals that he is Beerus's martial arts instructor. Vegeta immediately demands to be taken to Beerus's world for training, but Whis requires a tastier incentive.
Vegeta discovers that Bulma has already taken Whis to every fine restaurant he can think of. Forced to cook on his own, the Saiyan prince fails spectacularly at cracking eggs, his uncontrolled strength shattering every shell. Desperate, he presents Whis with a cup of instant ramen, claiming Bulma eats it obsessively and that it is Earth's most delicious food. Whis tastes it, and his face lights up. The deal is struck. As they travel through space toward Beerus's planet, Bulma gives Vegeta fresh Battle Armor so he will not embarrass himself in front of a god.
Vegeta's willingness to cook, grovel, and market instant noodles marks a notable shift for the proud Saiyan prince. In earlier arcs he would never have lowered himself to bribery, yet the desire to surpass Goku and Beerus on his own terms overrides his ego. The comedy of Vegeta struggling with eggs and wearing a pink apron works precisely because it contrasts so sharply with his battlefield ferocity.
The brief scene where Krillin asks to be punched serves a dual purpose. It reminds the audience how far Goku has outpaced his oldest friend, and it establishes that Goku's restlessness is growing. He sneaks off to train as a Super Saiyan the moment nobody is watching, setting up his own eventual departure for Beerus's world.
Episode 16 is the first episode officially listed under the Golden Frieza Saga. The mysterious disappearing planets that worry the Kais foreshadow the activities of Champa and Vados, though that connection is not made explicit yet. Vegeta's solo departure to train under Whis also creates the separation that will leave Earth vulnerable when Frieza returns, since both Saiyans are off-world for an extended period.
